AMERICAN PLAYHOUSE: THE BALLAD OF GREGORIO CORTEZ (TV)
Summary
One in this dramatic anthology series. This drama is adapted from the novel "With a Pistol in His Hand: A Border Ballad and Its Hero" by Americo Paredes. Set in the year 1901, the drama follows Chicano cowhand Gregorio Cortez (Olmos), who becomes involved in tragic circumstances that result in the shooting death of the town sheriff of Gonzales, Texas. Fearing that cruel frontier justice is inevitable, Cortez flees for Mexico, with the largest manhunt in Texas history in pursuit. When he is finally captured at the Rio Grande as the result of a betrayal, Cortez is sentenced to 50 years in prison, and then is ultimately pardoned by the Governor for the shooting, which he had always maintained was an act of self-defense.
