HERE'S LUCY: LUCY PROTECTS HER JOB (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series starring Lucille Ball as Lucy Carter, a single mother working for her brother-in-law Harry at his employment agency.
Harry catches Mary Jane giving Lucy a manicure at the office and interrupts it to try to get her back to work. His golf buddy arrives and Harry laments that he is unable to convince Lucy to do anything. He advises Harry to treat her with more respect and kindness in order to improve her efficiency. He takes the advice to heart, but Lucy is immediately suspicious of his sudden change in demeanor. His attitude soon reverts back to its usual form when Lucy accidentally scatters a stack of important documents all over his office. He yells at her to leave and never return, and Lucy runs off. The next day Lucy comes back to work and Harry acts nice again, giving her roses in an attempt to apologize to her. Lucy is quite pleased with this development. Mary Jane enters and Harry insists to her that he is no longer an “old grouch.” However, his attempts are undermined by his temper attempting to reassert itself, as well as a “gift” to Lucy of a portrait of himself. He also tells Lucy to hire another secretary in order to alleviate her workload, although Lucy suspects that he is actually trying to replace her, explaining his sudden outburst of kindness.
Lucy interviews a number of candidates for the position but turns them all away on one pretense or another. Meanwhile, Kim informs Lucy that she got the part of a “dumb bunny”-type secretary in a community play, much to her excitement. Lucy, realizing that Kim’s part calls for her to be “incompetent” and constantly fouling things up, asks her to stay in the office as her new secretary, hoping to get back at Harry for supposedly intending to replace her. Kim arrives at the office in disguise, acting like a stereotypical “dumb blonde.” She causes mayhem, including accidentally dropping a typewriter on Harry’s foot and spilling the contents of a water cooler all over him. Harry becomes furious and fires Kim; Lucy learns that Harry intends to keep her on and keep her working “harder than ever.” Kim leaves as Harry realizes her true identity. Commercials deleted.
