STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION: HALF A LIFE (TV)
Summary
One in this series of science fiction programs about the voyages of the U.S.S. Enterprise in the 24th century. This sequel to the original "Star Trek" series is set approximately 85 years after the journeys of the first Enterprise crew. In this episode, betazoid Lwaxana Troi, mother of Counselor Deanna Troi, becomes romantically involved with renowned scientist Dr. Timicin (David Ogden Stiers). The scientist is aboard the Enterprise to perform stellar ignition tests on a sun in an uninhabited galaxy in order to revive his own planet's dying sun. When he needs more time for his promising yet unproven theories, the doctor faces his greatest dilemma. The rules of Timicin's culture require all people to commit a ritual suicide called a "resolution" on their 60th birthday so that they will not burden the young or die lonely. When Lwaxana coaxes Timicin to seek asylum with Picard, the doctor must choose between his love for both his work and Lwaxana and the strong cultural bonds that require him to end his life.
