SOUL MAN: PLAY BALL (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about an Episcopal minister dealing with his family and parishioners.

Meredith asks Mike to sign her up for tap-dancing lessons. Former Detroit Tigers pitcher Micky Lolich attends one of Mike's services and informs him that the Tigers are looking for a new team chaplain. Mike wants the job, believing that such a position would be fun. Meredith starts attending her tap-dancing lessons, but she seems to make very little progress. Todd reveals that he also spoke to Mickey, and he wants the chaplain job as well. He and Mike get into an argument over who deserves the position more. Andy is secretly interested in tap-dancing, and appears to have much more skill in it than Meredith.

Mike plans a big dinner with Alex Watson, team manager of the Detroit Tigers, in order to curry favor and win the chaplain position. He tries to get Todd out of the way for the night by assigning him to soup kitchen duty, but Todd finds out the truth from Fred. Mike prepares the dinner, even writing baseball statistics on household objects so that he can read off of them. However, he is surprised when he discovers that Alex is a woman, spoiling many of his plans. During the evening, Todd visits and tries to impress Alex himself. He and Mike contest with each other, each one trying to make their own accomplishments seem more impressive.

Kenny comes across Andy practicing his tap-dancing in the church and makes fun of him. The two of them fight and Meredith fetches Mike, interrupting his talk with Alex. He arrives and discovers that Andy is proficient at tap-dancing, and Meredith admits that she hates it. Thus they resolve to have Andy take up Meredith's tap-dancing classes. Mike returns to bid Alex farewell, and he and Todd continue their argument. Todd reveals that when he was growing up with his single mother, baseball made him feel like "part of a family," explaining his passion for the game. Todd leaves, and Alex returns to retrieve her phone. She confides in Mike that she has chosen him for the chaplain position, although Mike feels guilty about ruining Todd's dreams, so he decides to allow Todd to take the position instead of him, much to Todd's delight. Includes commercials.
