MEDICAL CENTER: THE LAST PERFORMANCE (TV)

Summary

One in this series of medical dramas about the cases of Dr. Paul Lochner, chief of staff at a Los Angeles university hospital called Medical Center, and his friend and colleague, Dr. Joe Gannon, a young professor of surgery.

In this episode, Dr. Lochner comes back into contact with a woman he once loved, opera singer Maria Swinburne. She is admitted to the hospital after several fainting spells, where Dr. Gannon quickly diagnoses her high blood pressure and suspects that she has a tumor. Maria's manager of 10 years, Alex, bristles at her hospital stay, and seems alarmed by the romantic sparks between Dr. Lochner and Maria. Later, Dr. Lochner declares that he loves her.

After operating on Maria, Dr. Gannon finds that her tumor is malignant and realizes that she has less than a year to live. Maria insists to Dr. Gannon that Dr. Lochner, now her fiance, be told that she has a clean bill of health. She plans to break the engagement and return to her opera tour, believing that she would only be a burden to Dr. Lochner. He discovers the truth, but is advised by Dr. Gannon to let Maria continue her deception. The two lovers say goodbye and Maria holds back tears as she sings her final number on stage while Dr. Lochner looks on from the wings. Includes commercials.
