One in this weekly drama series featuring adaptations of popular and literary classics. Orson Welles introduces the program with authoritative definitions of a hurricane, and describes the theme of the story. Eugene de Laage, the new governor of a South Pacific island, is welcomed by the natives, but his stern rule soon provokes resentment. One of the natives, Terangi, is arrested on another island after a barroom brawl provoked by a white man who is influential in de Laage's government. Despite Terangi's innocence and the plight of Terangi's pregnant wife, de Laage does nothing to set him free. Terangi escapes from jail seven years later. Ignoring an approaching hurricane, de Laage sets sail for a nearby island where Terangi is hiding. He returns home to find everything destroyed but is grateful to discover that his wife, Germaine, has been rescued from death by Terangi. The program ends with Welles and Astor discussing the perilous stunts she performed as de Laage's wife in the 1937 movie version of the novel; and an announcement of the following week's drama, "The Murder of Roger Ackroyd" with Edna May Oliver. Includes commercials for Campbell's soup.
