CAMPBELL PLAYHOUSE: ARROWSMITH (RADIO)
Summary
One in this weekly drama series featuring adaptations of popular and literary classics. Orson Welles introduces the drama as one of a number of plays, books, and films about heroes of medicine. The story opens with Martin Arrowsmith receiving a science research award, which prompts memories of his early days in medical school and his mentor, Prof. Gottlieb. The drama is told in flashback. Arrowsmith meets and marries nurse-in-training Leora. They move to her hometown, where he sets up his first practice and continues his research. He loses his patients' confidence, however, because of a misdiagnosis. Arrowsmith works on a vaccine with Gottlieb. He and Leora travel to a plague-ridden tropical island to test the vaccine, but Leora contracts a disease and dies. The program ends with Welles and Hayes discussing her family life on a farm in Nyack, New York; an announcement of the following week's drama, "The Green Goddess" with Madeleine Carroll; and closing credits. Includes commercials.
