MERCURY THEATRE ON THE AIR: FIRST PERSON SINGULAR: THE THIRTY-NINE STEPS, PT. 1 {REHEARSAL} (RADIO)

Summary

Part one of two in the final rehearsal of a dramatization of John Buchan's novel, "The Thirty-nine Steps," one in this dramatic anthology series -- featuring adaptations of well-known novels, plays, and films -- produced, directed, written, hosted, and performed by Orson Welles, with the Mercury Theatre Company. Welles constantly interrupts the rehearsal to point out mistakes, including a missing page in his own script. In this part, Marmaduke Jopley (Welles) finds a dead body in Richard Hannay's London apartment. Meanwhile, in a remote area of Scotland, Hannay tells Sir Harry Parkhurst how he came to be wanted for this murder. The story flashes back to Hannay in his apartment receiving a surprise visit from a spy, Scudder, who tells him about a plot to steal British defense plans and start a war. When Hannay finds Scudder dead, he flees, chased by enemy agents and the Scotland Yard. Sir Harry finds Hannay after an automobile accident in Scotland, and brings his tale to the attention of his friend, the British home secretary. They find the enemy agent's hideout by following the cryptic clue left by Scudder. Continues with R88:0185.
