51 STATE, THE {THE FIFTY-FIRST STATE}: COPS (TV)

Summary

One in this series of nightly news programs providing in-depth coverage of issues affecting the New York metropolitan area. This program centers on a documentary about anti-crime units that employ undercover police to curb street violence. Filmed in the Bedford Stuyvesant area of Brooklyn, N.Y., the program features reporter Richard Kotuk spending time with two detectives in the 79th Precinct as they patrol their beat. Intercut with graphic footage of assault and murder victims, and shots of a combat training session at the City Island, N.Y., firing range, are interviews with the detectives and their commanding officer, and commentary by Kotuk. Also included in this program is Selwyn Raab's interview with Moshe Dayan, who was in New York City at the time of the broadcast to promote the sale of Israeli bonds. Among the topics discussed are Pres. Richard Nixon's intention to help Egypt build a nuclear power plant, and its potential threat to Israel; Dayan's involvement in the Yom Kippur War and his subsequent departure from the Israeli government; and anti-Zionist sentiment in the American Jewish community. Raab closes the program with a retrospective look at the first three years of the series, and lists some of the notable programs, including "Bronx Gangs," "Graystone Hospital," "Forgotten Vets," and "The George Whitmore Story."
