MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO, THE: WILLIAM S. PALEY TELEVISION FESTIVAL 2002: ST. ELSEWHERE {LONG VERSION}

Summary

One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Museum of Television & Radio's William S. Paley Television Festival in Los Angeles. Held this year at the Directors Guild of America Theatre Complex, the festival celebrates the excellence and diversity of American television and is dedicated to television's creative community. This evening's presentation honors "St. Elsewhere," a medical drama from the 1980s set in St. Eligius hospital in Boston. Museum television curator David Bushman, who moderates, opens with remarks about the program, explaining that some critics called it "possibly the best drama series in the history of television." Bushman goes on to introduce his guests: producer/writer Tom Fontana; writer/producer John Masius; producer/director Mark Tinker; cast members Ed Begley, Jr., Stephen Furst, Terence Knox, Norman Lloyd, Howie Mandel, Christina Pickles, and William Daniels; and executive producer Bruce Paltrow. Paltrow introduces the tape to be screened, which features the episode "Cheers." It also includes clips from other episodes, including "Afterlife" and "Family Affair." After the screening, as the panelists discuss a variety of issues and take questions from the audience, the following topics are discussed, among others: the memory of Ed Flanders; the scene that was shot on the set of "Cheers"; the technique of the program's writers; the actors' worries about being written off the series; the debt of "St. Elsewhere" to Bruce Paltrow; the fun the cast and crew had working on the program; the formulation of the final episode; some experiences the actors had after becoming well known through the drama; motivations behind the writers' story ideas; and working around network censors.

(This tape includes the "St. Elsewhere" episode "Cheers." This episode is part of the Museum's collection and may be viewed separately. See T:14436 for summary.)
