PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: PALEY AFTER DARK: AN EVENING WITH TED TURNER {LONG VERSION}

Summary

One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Paley Center for Media’s Paley After Dark series. Held at The Paley Center for Media in New York, this evening honors media mogul Ted Turner. Ron Simon (television curator, The Paley Center for Media) offers opening remarks before introducing a series of clips compiled by Turner’s son, Rhett, which trace milestones in Turner’s life, along with associates' comments about his philanthropic pursuits. Next, Simon introduces the evening’s moderator, Christiane Amanpour (chief international correspondent, CNN), who brings Turner to the stage.

Topics discussed by Turner and Amanpour include: inspirational figures from Turner’s childhood; the motivation for Turner to form CNN; the cable network's shaky financial situation in its early days; his “lonely” childhood and how it shaped his philosophy on life; the pain of reliving his past when writing his autobiography; his reaction to the "devastating" year in which he lost seven billion dollars, his job at Time Warner, Inc., and divorced from Jane Fonda; thoughts on the election of President Barack Obama and the looming economic crisis; the period of life when he was happiest; his growing sense of “irrelevance”; his plans for global nuclear disarmament; thoughts on his pending seventieth birthday; concerns about global warming; if the government should bail out General Motors; his response to people calling him “a nut”; if the current recession will turn into a depression; his thoughts on the future of news media; his dislike for the policies of President George W. Bush; the reasons his marriage to Fonda dissolved; the “idealism” that fuels his enterprises; and his dissatisfaction with U.S military expenditures.

Questions from the audience lead to a discussion of the following topics: regrets over insensitive remarks made during his career; his philosophy on risk-taking; his feelings on illegal immigration; women's ongoing need for equality; the cost of converting an entire country to ecologically safe energy sources; his prediction for what will occur after the Kyoto Protocol -- the United Nations-directed fight against global warming -- expires; and recollections of winning the America's Cup.
