This "ABC News Special Report" presents coverage of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and their aftermath, as aired on ABC affiliate KABC-TV (Los Angeles). This coverage begins at 3:00 a.m. EDT on Wednesday, September 12, with a re-airing of the network's chronological video depicting the events of the previous twenty hours. Anchor Elizabeth Vargas then speaks with reporter Jim Sciutto, who is at the site of the Pentagon crash, about a wire report that states that a militant Islamic group from Pakistan has claimed responsibility for the attacks. Vargas notes that in the wake of any terrorist attack random groups inevitably come forward to claim responsibility for things with which they clearly have had nothing to do. Vargas then runs a video clip narrated by Chris Cuomo about the New York Fire Department. Next, Vargas reports that the Boston Herald has named five suspects in the attacks. She then speaks with Barry Serafin, who discusses the procedure that led to several congressmen's evacuation from Washington, D.C., to a secure bunker in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Vargas then shows a pair of brief clips: a statement from New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani from an earlier press conference, and Peter Jennings's earlier interview with Lawrence Eagleburger. Vargas then offers a more thorough report on the situation in Boston. She states that the Boston Globe has run an article declaring that a car believed to be registered to a passenger on one of the flights has been discovered in the parking lot of Logan Airport in Boston. The car reportedly contained Arab-language flight manuals. Jim Sciutto at the Pentagon reports that the building is still, frustratingly, on fire. Reporter Derek McGinty then joins Vargas to discuss the editorials that have begun to appear in early editions of the nation's newspapers. Vargas then re-runs tape of Peter Jennings's earlier conversation with Alice Hoglan, the mother of United Flight 93 passenger Mark Bingham, who called home as the plane was being hijacked. Next, Vargas speaks with Bill Blakemore at the site of the collapsed Twin Towers. Blakemore says that many workers there take hope from the fact that in building collapses caused by earthquakes survivors are often found even days after the original tragedy.
