ABC'S WIDE WORLD OF SPORTS: WORLD FIGURE SKATING CHAMPIONSHIPS, 1979 (TV)
Summary
One in this series of sports programs. This program features coverage of the 1979 World Figure Skating Championships from Vienna, Austria, and the 1979 Women's Masters Surfing Championships from Sunset Beach, Oahu, Hawaii. From Vienna, McKay and Button set the stage for the figure skating championships, the last major skating event before the 1980 Winter Olympics. Highlights include the following: the skating of Russians Marina Cherkasova and Sergei Shakrai; the skating of East Germans Sabine Baesz and Tassilo Thierbach; a look at the 1974 U.S. Figure Skating Championships and the skating of Tai Babilonia and Randy Gardner; Robert Riger's look at the training of Babilonia and Gardner. Babilonia and Gardner win the pairs championship, only the second time an American pair has won the championship. Button interviews them. From Hawaii, Andrea Kirby is joined by 1977 Men's World Surfing Champion, Shaun Tomson, with coverage of the Women's Masters Surfing Championships. From New York, Frank Gifford advises viewers of upcoming sports coverage on ABC. Back in Hawaii, Lynne Boyer of Hawaii is the eventual winner of the surfing championships and is interviewed by Kirby and Tomson. Coverage of figure skating resumes as McKay and Button set the stage for the men's figure skating competition. Defending men's world figure skating champion, Charles Tickner of the U.S. is interviewed. Tickner begins his program. Includes commercials. Program cuts off somewhat abruptly.
