PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: LORDS OF THE REVOLUTION: ANDY WARHOL {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented by The Paley Center for Media’s Inside Media series. Held at The Paley Center for Media in New York, this evening hosts the premiere of "Lords of the Revolution: Andy Warhol," one in a VH1 documentary series on influential counter-culture leaders of the 20th century. This episode spotlights provocative artist and filmmaker Andy Warhol. Ron Simon (television curator, The Paley Center for Media) brings Brad Abramson, VH1's vice president of production and programming, to the stage. Abramson then introduces the film, which is screened in its entirety. (For synopsis and credits, see ACCNUM 100334).
After the screening, moderator Martin Torgoff ("Lords of the Revolution" consulting producer/writer) introduces the panelists, all of whom appear in the film: Warhol screenwriter Bob Heide; Warhol actress Bibbe Hansen; "Factory regular" Danny Fields; and "Factory manager"/photographer Billy Name.
The panelists discuss topics which include: how Warhol’s influence in the art world led to a surge of realism in graphic art; Name’s creation of Warhol’s "Silver Factory" in midtown Manhattan; how Warhol and Name met; the work environment at Warhol’s Factory; Hansen's memories of the Factory having a calming effect on her; Warhol’s controversial comments about the suicide of his friend Freddy Herko; how the setting of New York in the 1960s influenced Warhol’s psychology; Warhol’s first meeting with "Girl of the Year" Edie Sedgwick; Fields’ negative reaction to the 2006 film "Factory Girl" about Warhol's relationship with Sedgwick, as played by Guy Pearce and Sienna Miller; the process of making Warhol’s landmark film "Chelsea Girls"; and Warhol’s continuing influence on present-day culture.
Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics: the importance of the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh; the availability of Warhol’s earlier films; what Warhol considered to be the best quality of his movies; the New York locales where Warhol and his associates got inspiration; and why historians often ignore Warhol's pre-pop art period.
