GLEE: SHOWMANCE (TV)
Summary
One in this satirical comedy musical series about a high school glee club in Lima, Ohio. In this episode, Will enters the high school and greets his students, including Finn, who shyly flirts with Rachel, and Kurt, who is being thrown in the dumpster by Puck again. He encounters Emma in the hall and they chat awkwardly for a moment before Will is summoned to Sue’s office. Sue informs him that Principal Figgins has stated that the glee club needs to place at the regional competition or else they will be disbanded, but that according to the rules, they need twelve students to participate, and they currently have only half that. She encourages him to “euthanize” his tiny club, but he has faith in them and says that they will make it somehow. In the hall, Rachel overhears Quinn berating Finn about joining the uncool glee club, offering sexual favors in exchange for his quitting, but he refuses. Quinn confronts the eavesdropping Rachel, who states that she is not after Finn and has high hopes for glee, although she is then immediately slushied by members of the football team. At rehearsal, the kids practice “Freak Out” by Chic and voice their dislike for the antiquated song, but Will insists that they need to gain recruits at the upcoming pep assembly and that the song is a sure hit. He reflects upon his personal issues, remembering a recent visit from his sister-in-law and her annoying triplets, informing him and his pregnant wife Terri that they need to upgrade to a larger house. They find a new and expensive house, which Will states they cannot afford, but Terri sweet-talks him into it, saying it is for the good of their family. At the next rehearsal, Will offers the kids Kanye West’s “Gold Digger” to appease their requests for more current music. Later, Emma finds Rachel attempting to throw up in the bathroom, and in Emma’s office, Rachel admits that she wants to be thinner and prettier to win over Finn. Thinking of her fruitless crush on Will, Emma advises her to find some common interests with Finn. However, he and Rachel soon find themselves dragged into Figgins’ office by Sue, who is outraged that they used her photocopier to make fliers advertising glee club in an attempt to recruit new students without having to perform the embarrassing song. Figgins refuses to punish them harshly, and Will says they are still doing the song. At home, Will says he has had trouble finding a second job to pay for the new house, but Terri gives him an earful about her sacrifices and hard work at Sheets ‘n’ Things, and he gives in and asks Figgins if he can moonlight as a janitor at half salary. Taking Emma’s advice, Rachel joins the Celibacy Club along with Quinn and Finn, although Finn admits that he only joined in the hopes of achieving exactly the opposite of celibacy with Quinn. Another boy inquires about a common sexual issue, and Finn privately thinks about his personal method of “distracting” himself: forcing himself to remember the time he hit a mailman whilst practicing driving with his mother. Fed up with the hypocrisy in the room, Rachel blurts out that celibacy is a naïve method and that girls desire sex too, and leaves. Later that night, Emma finds Will at his janitorial job and ends up helping him, revealing her mysophobic tendencies. Will offers to help her overcome them, and they flirt. Inspired by her experience that Celibacy Club, Rachel suggests a new method of recruiting students into glee club, and at the assembly, instead of “Le Freak,” the group launches into a highly inappropriate rendition of Salt-N-Pepa’s “Push It.” The students are thrilled, but Sue, Figgins and Will are less than pleased. Figgins provides Will with a list of pre-approved squeaky-clean songs for the glee club, and though Rachel tries to apologize, Will is angry with her and the others for ruining their chances. In the lunchroom, the gym teacher, Ken Tanaka, calls Emma out on her inappropriate crush on Will and asks her out, saying that he is not much, but will treat her right, and she considers. Rachel and Finn get together for some private rehearsal and he compliments her singing talent, and they end up kissing. His mailman memory appears to fail him, however, and he runs off, asking her not to tell anyone. Quinn, along with her fellow Cheerios Santana and Brittany, perform Dionne Warwick’s “I Say A Little Prayer” for Will and are accepted into glee. This angers Sue, but Quinn admits that she is worried that there is something going on between Finn and “that thing” Rachel, and Sue sees the opportunity to use her cheerleaders as spies. Will asks Emma for another cleaning “date” that evening, but she turns him down, saying she is going out with Ken, although she seems heartbroken about it. Terri learns that she is actually experiencing a hysterical pregnancy and there is no baby, but she cannot bring herself to tell Will the truth and instead tells them that they are having a boy and adds that he should drop the second job, as she no longer wants the expensive house. At school, Rachel is upset to learn that Quinn has received a solo in glee club, but Will informs her that she cannot be the only star. Hurt over this, and over Finn’s continued romance with Quinn, she sings an emotional rendition of Rihanna’s “Take A Bow.” Commercials deleted.
