MODERN FAMILY: PILOT {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The first in this comedy series, a "mockumentary" about the eccentric individuals comprising three inter-related families in Los Angeles. In this episode, Phil and Claire Dunphy, married sixteen years, debate their oldest daughter Haley's questionable dress sense. Elsewhere, sixty-something Jay Pritchett attends his stepson Manny's soccer game with his glamorous and much younger Colombian wife of six months Gloria, embarrassed when he is mistaken for her father. Mitchell and his partner of five years Cameron bring their newly-adopted baby daughter Lily home from Vietnam, and Mitchell gives an unnecessary "speech" about tolerance to the plane passengers. Haley announces that she has invited a male friend, Dylan, over to the house, and self-proclaimed "cool dad" Phil is upset when his dimwitted son Luke accidentally injures acerbic middle daughter Alex with a BB gun and Claire reminds him that he swore to "shoot" Luke in retaliation if he misused the toy. Manny admits that he has a crush on an older girl and Gloria happily observes that he is "passionate" like his father, though Jay is sure that things will go wrong.
Mitchell is disturbed by an outrageous painting in Lily's nursery, and Cam reveals that he has invited Mitchell's extended family over for dinner to announce Lily's adoption, knowing that he has been avoiding the necessary "big emotional scene." Phil attempts to intimidate a bewildered Dylan, though ends up hurting his back in the process. Manny is saddened when his paramour turns out to have a boyfriend, though Gloria praises his bravery in telling her of his feelings in a poem, and Jay decides to start dressing more youthfully when he is mistaken for a "mall-walker." Claire frets about Haley and Dylan's private time together and Phil tries to force himself to teach his son a harsh lesson, though he proves to be at least as irresponsible with the BB gun as Luke was. Mitchell's family members arrive for dinner, revealing that Claire is his sister and Jay their father, and Mitchell struggles to make his big announcement, and though everyone misunderstands the news at first, Cameron dramatically presents the baby and everyone is excited to meet their new relative. Later, Jay reads through Manny's flowery poem, and Phil and Luke play an oddly competitive round of basketball. Commercials deleted.
