SANCTUARY: SANCTUARY FOR ALL {SERIES PREMIERE} {SEGMENT} (TV)
Summary
A segment from the premiere of this science-fiction series about immortal scientist Helen Magnus and her efforts to run an organization which protects and learns from monster-like "abnormals." (Before this segment begins, the episode focuses on two police officers investigating a disturbance in the home of Eastern European immigrants. As they find a body, the two officers are killed by a snake-like creature. However, forensic psychiatrist Will Zimmerman finds each victim with what appears to be a gunshot wound to the forehead. Will gives chase to a boy leaving the crime scene and is subsequently run over by a car driven by Helen Magnus.) The segment begins as the recovering Will enters Helen's car and she takes him to her place of employment: the Sanctuary. Located underneath an abandoned cathedral, the organization houses "nature's triumphs and mistakes," allowing Helen to study them while offering protection to each. Helen gives Will a tour of the compound, leaving him amazed by the creatures, including "former patient" and current butler Bigfoot. Meanwhile, on the compound's perimeter, John Druitt, Helen's murderous former lover, uses his magical ability to transport himself, suddenly appearing within Sanctuary. Elsewhere, Helen and John's daughter, Ashley, captures the errant boy, who Helen believes to be a candidate for Sanctuary. When Will and Helen join Ashley, they see that the boy is indeed an oddity, having a snakelike appendage that strikes from outside his rib cage when he senses fright. Helen thinks Will can help her gain the boy's trust, after which she can evaluate him. Helen and her assistant, weapons designer Henry Foss, observe as Will addresses the boy, with Bigfoot's aid. Later, Henry tells Helen about the discovery of a prostitute's body, which Helen assumes to be the work of John. As Will continues to work with the boy, he realizes that the snake-like creature attacks the brains of its victims, leaving a hole that looks like a gunshot. Will gets the boy to reveal that his name is Alexei and to tell of how he came to be "a killer against his own will." Defying Helen's orders, Ashley goes to see weapons dealer Sylvio Rudd, who is subsequently attacked by John as Ashley fights back. Finally, atop the cathedral's ramparts, Helen tells Will that it is his destiny to join Sanctuary, an act that was determined when he saw his mother killed by an abnormal when he was a boy.
