JUSTICE LEAGUE: CRISIS ON TWO EARTHS

Summary

An animated film about the Justice League encountering their evil counterparts from an alternate universe. The story opens on an alternate earth as a crime-fighting version of Lex Luthor steals a device from the Crime Syndicate, evil doppelgangers of the Justice League. Before the Crime Syndicate can apprehend him, Luthor travels to the normal universe, where he encounters the Justice League, who is busy constructing their new satellite base, the Watchtower. Luthor explains that he is the last remaining member of his world’s Justice League, acting as freedom fighters against the oppressive Crime Syndicate, which rules his world with an iron fist. The Justice League agrees to help Luthor free his world from the tyrannical Crime Syndicate, but Batman elects to remain behind. Unbeknownst to the Justice League, Luthor has hidden the device he stole on the Watchtower. Luthor and the Justice League arrive on the alternate earth, only to be greeted by Owlman and Superwoman, evil alternate versions of Batman and Wonder Woman respectively. They and their superpowered minions battle with the Justice League while Owlman extracts Luthor’s data about alternate universes. The struggle ends in a draw when Wonder Woman hijacks Owlman’s jet and uses its cloaking technology to escape with Luthor and the Justice League. At a meeting of the Crime Syndicate, Owlman reveals he is working on a quantum bomb capable of destroying the entire planet. Ultraman, Superman’s evil counterpart, hopes to use this as leverage to cement their takeover of the world. At a makeshift headquarters, Luthor elaborates on the Crime Syndicate and their “made men,” humans working in the Syndicate’s mobs granted superpowers in exchange for servitude. Superman suggests that Luthor and the League split up and confront the Syndicate members one by one. Meanwhile, Owlman reveals to Superwoman that he has recreated Luthor’s universe-traveling technology for an unknown purpose. The League succeeds in capturing the members of the Crime Syndicate, but the president orders the release of the Syndicate due to the legal ramifications of keeping them imprisoned. The president’s daughter, Rose Wilson, protests this; she has been an outspoken critic of her father’s administration and has spoken in public about her distaste for the situation with the Crime Syndicate. Meanwhile, Owlman is nearing the completion of his quantum bomb. He confides in Superwoman that his intentions for the bomb are for more than leverage; his discovery of an infinite number of parallel worlds has led him to believe that life is meaningless. He intends to take his bomb to “Earth Prime,” the “original” Earth, and detonate it there, which will cause a chain reaction that will annihilate all reality. President Wilson warns his daughter about speaking out against the Syndicate, but she ignores him. Ultraman appears, threatening his daughter if she speaks out again. Owlman instructs Superwoman to travel to the Justice League’s home world and retrieve the device Luthor stole. There, she encounters Batman, who is installing systems in the Watchtower. He and several other superheroes fight Superwoman and her minions, but she retrieves the device successfully. Batman intercepts her as she travels to her home world, accompanying her there. They fight, and Batman manages to subdue her, but her minion manages to escape with the device. Meanwhile, Rose holds a public protest against the Crime Syndicate. Archer, an agent of the Crime Syndicate, attempts to assassinate her, but is stopped by J’onn J’onzz. He vows to keep watch over her until her life is no longer in danger. The Justice League and Luthor meet up with Batman. Luthor explains that the device Superwoman stole was the detonator for Owlman’s quantum bomb. J’onn and Rose talk, and J’onn discovers that Rose is “attuned” to his mind. They telepathically share their thoughts and experiences, and Rose volunteers to get the location of the Crime Syndicate’s secret base from her father. Later, on the moon, Luthor and the Justice League, with Superwoman as their prisoner, infiltrate the Crime Syndicate’s secret base. The Justice League and Crime Syndicate fight. During the course of the battle, Owlman discovers the coordinates to Earth Prime and transports himself and the quantum bomb there. Batman tries to follow, but Owlman has inhibited Luthor’s own universe-traveling device. Luthor devises a plan to match the exact vibrational frequency of Earth Prime to create a portal, and Johnny Quick (the Flashes’ evil counterpart) volunteers. The portal is opened and Batman rushes in alone. Owlman and Batman fight in the bizarre, desolate landscape of Earth Prime, Owlman expositing that the existence of choice and mankind has torn the multiverse into chaos, and that by destroying reality he will have made the only possible meaningful choice. At first, Owlman seems to gain the upper hand, but Batman uses the universe-traveling device to shunt Owlman and the quantum bomb to a desolate, uninhabited world, thereby preventing the destruction of all reality. Batman returns, and Johnny Quick dies, his life drained due to his matching the vibrational frequency of Earth Prime. When Ultraman prepares to fight the Justice League again, the marines storm the Crime Syndicate headquarters, no longer afraid to stand up to the Syndicate. As the Justice League prepare to return to their home world, Rose asks J’onn to stay with her, but he refuses, saying he still has responsibilities on his earth. The film ends as the Justice League return to their Watchtower and Batman reveals he has recruited the superheroes that aided him against Superwoman into the League.
