PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: PALEYFEST 2010: GLEE {PUBLIC SHORT VERSION ANAMORPHIC}

Summary

One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Paley Center for Media’s 27th William S. Paley Television Festival in Los Angeles. Held this year at the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills, the festival celebrates the excellence and diversity of American television and is dedicated to television’s creative community. This evening honors "Glee,” a music-based comedy/drama series about members of a glee club, as well as their teachers, at a high school in Ohio.

Moderator Marc Malkin (E! Online senior editor) offers opening remarks before introducing the panelists: executive producers/co-creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk; executive producer Dante Di Loreto; co-executive producer/co-creator Ian Brennan; and cast members Jonathan Groff (Jesse St. James); Jessalyn Gilsig (Terri Schuester); Jenna Ushkowitz (Tina Cohen-Chang); Kevin McHale (Artie Abrams); Dianna Agron (Quinn Fabray); Mark Salling (Noah "Puck" Puckerman); Jayma Mays (Emma Pillsbury); Chris Colfer (Kurt Hummel); Amber Riley (Mercedes Jones); Cory Monteith (Finn Hudson); Jane Lynch (Sue Sylvester); and Matthew Morrison (Will Schuester). Cast member Lea Michele (Rachel Berry) was scheduled to participate but was unable to attend.

Panelists touch on such topics as: how Murphy dramatically switched gears from "Nip/Tuck" to "Glee"; why only "cover songs" are performed on the show; whether a Broadway show or "Glee" is harder work for Morrison; censors' reactions to ongoing risque jokes; lines which have "pushed the envelope"; why Lynch was the one cast member that didn't have to audition; who picks the musical selections; which artists have refused to let their songs be covered; Colfer's observation on "newfound friends" when returning to his home town; Murphy's having choreographed a musical number focusing on wheelchairs; how Madonna's tribute episode originated; "newbie" Groff's reaction to joining the cast after it had become well-established; Murphy having based the gay character of Kurt on himself; the use of guest stars like Neil Patrick Harris; if Lynch and Gilsig enjoy being the "dark forces" on an upbeat show; and cast members' injuries during the choreographed numbers.

Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics: if fans constantly sing to Murphy on the street; cast members' unusual interactions with fans; if songs are incorporated into storylines, or dialogue is written around a song selection; future plot developments; how long it takes to put a typical episode together; the "greatest hits" touring production of the show; the cast performing at the White House for President Barack Obama and his family; if Kristin Chenoweth will become a regular; and teachers that inspired the cast and crew.
