PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: PALEYFEST 2010: CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM {LONG VERSION ANAMORPHIC}
Summary
One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Paley Center for Media’s 27th William S. Paley Television Festival in Los Angeles. Held this year at the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills, the festival celebrates the excellence and diversity of American television and is dedicated to television’s creative community.
This evening honors "Curb Your Enthusiasm,” a comedy series in which producer/comedian Larry David plays himself. Host Craig Hitchcock (executive director, The Paley Center for Media) offers opening remarks on the final night of the 2010 festival. He then acknowledges William C. Paley, son of the festival's namesake, before introducing moderator Martin Miller (television editor, Los Angeles Times). Miller provides background about the show before introducing an extensive clip package that cover's the show's seven seasons.
Following the screening, Miller introduces the panelists: cast members Bob Einstein (Marty Funkhouser), Richard Lewis (himself), Susie Essman (Susie Greene), Cheryl Hines (Cheryl David), Jeff Garlin (Jeff Greene), and Larry David (himself).
Panelists touch on such topics as: if a big-screen version of the show is in the works; reactions to reuniting the cast of Jerry Seinfeld's titular show during season seven; Essman's theories on her character's foul-mouthed rages; how Garlin was convinced by David to become a series regular; the manner in which the series evolved from an HBO special; David's decision to use improv on the show to make for a documentary feel; why Hines initially assumed she was wrong for the wife's role; Lewis's fifty-year friendship with David; why most of Lewis and David's scenes involve fighting; how the cast deals with having no rehearsal period; the ways in which Einstein continually "offends" David; whether David is similar to his character; Essman's reaction when guest star Vivica A. Fox trash-talked her on the show; what fans constantly ask Essman to do for them; Lewis's "biggest burden" from being on the show; Hines's reaction to her character walking away from marriage; whether David is planning an eighth season of the show; if there are taboo subjects for the show; goofs on the show; and David's lack of etiquette with co-stars.
Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics: how Shelley Berman was cast as David's father; favorite guest stars; why so many racial and ethnic jokes are used in dialogue; the origins of the hair-cutting gaffe on "The Doll" episode; how David comes up with most of his ideas; Hines's experience going from the scripted "Brothers and Sisters" to the unscripted "Curb"; if storylines get altered due to dialogue being improvised; and classic television shows which inspired the panelists.
