LOST: FOLLOW THE LEADER (TV)

Summary

One in this fantasy drama series about a group of plane-crash survivors forced to live with each other on a remote and mysterious island. Characters’ past lives are told through frequent flashbacks. In this episode, in 1977, Jack and Kate watch as Daniel confronts the Others and are stunned when he is gunned down by his own mother. They attempt to escape, but are captured by the younger Charles Widmore. In 2007, Richard is very surprised to see someone who appears to be John Locke strolling into his camp, noting that there is “something different” about him. Ben admits to Sun that Locke is now the leader of the Others and that Richard is “an advisor” and has been for a “very long time.” Sun shows Richard a photo of the 1977 Dharma Initiative and asks if he remembers them, and he says he does because he “saw them all die.” However, Locke believes that Sun can be reunited with Jin and the others, and heads off into the jungle on an “errand” with Richard and Ben in tow. In 1977, Jack and Kate are thrown in Eloise’s tent and they debate the merits of going through with Daniel’s plan and “resetting” time by detonating the bomb, and she says that if Oceanic 815 lands normally, they will never meet. He argues that it is worth it because of all the “misery” they have suffered on the island. Eloise talks to them and demands answers, saying she met a man from the future once before—her son, Daniel, whom she has just shot. Jack explains how she can “take it back,” and she says that the bomb is now underneath the Dharma village but can be reached through underwater tunnels. Back at the barracks, Juliet and Sawyer, a.k.a. Jim LaFleur, are restrained and brutally questioned by Radzinsky and the others about their involvement with Ben’s shooting and the escape of Jack and Kate. Sawyer refuses to talk, becoming enraged when Phil hits Juliet. Hurley catches up with Miles and Jin, who are planning to escape to the beach, although they are waylaid by Dr. Chang, who has figured out that they are from the future and that Miles is his son, which he confirms. He agrees to follow Daniel’s orders to evacuate the island because of the forthcoming “accident” at the Swan. As Ben, Richard and Locke walk through the jungle in 2007, Ben has questions for Locke, who only says that he wants to see Jacob, and Richard says that “it doesn’t work like that.” Locke leads them to the downed Nigerian Beechcraft and tells Richard to go ahead and find an earlier version of himself, Locke, and give him instructions about bringing the Oceanic Six back via his own death. When Ben asks how Locke timed things so well, Locke replies “the island told me,” and states that Ben has never actually seen Jacob. When Richard returns, he says he is glad that Locke didn’t have to die after all, but Locke says that he did. When they return to camp, Locke makes a speech about how the Others have been taking orders from the unseen Jacob for long enough, and invites them all to come along as he goes to confront him. Richard notes that Locke is causing a lot of trouble, and Ben comments that he “tried” to kill Locke for this reason. Chang is surprised to find the Dharma crew interrogating Juliet and Sawyer and orders them to evacuate, but Radzinsky declares that the drilling at the Swan, which led to the “incident” which led to the crash of Oceanic 815, will continue no matter what. Sawyer requests to be put on the submarine with Juliet and the others in exchange for information, and they agree. Miles, Hurley and Jin spy on the evacuation process, and Miles is stunned to realize that his father sent him and his mother away for their own protection. Sawyer and Juliet are placed on the sub and Sawyer bids the island “good riddance.” Elsewhere, Eloise leads Jack and Kate towards the bomb, but Kate decides she cannot go through with the plan and tries to leave, but the Others stop her. Suddenly, Sayid arrives and guns a few Others down, telling Jack and Kate that he already “fixed” things by shooting Ben, but Kate tells him that they saved the boy. Jack argues that it is their “destiny” to set off the bomb, and Kate angrily tells him that he sounds like Locke. Eventually, Jack and Richard dive into a lake and find the tunnels leading to the bomb, where they are soon joined by Eloise and Sayid. Sayid has doubts about her helpfulness, but Jack says that she helped them in 2007, and she reveals the bomb, asking “Now what?” On the sub, Juliet and Sawyer consider being free in the “real world” and express their love for one another, although the moment is marred by the sudden appearance of Kate, who has left Jack’s side. In 2007, as the Others head off the beach, Ben catches up with Locke, who states that he has no intention of retrieving the survivors from the ‘70s and instead plans to kill Jacob, which shocks Ben.
