VIEW, THE {AMY ADAMS, CARRIE FISHER, MERYL STREEP} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of daytime talk shows hosted by a multi-generational group of women, moderated by actress Whoopi Goldberg, and including TV personality Elisabeth Hasselbeck, comedian Sherri Shepherd and comedian Joy Behar.

In this edition, the women discuss President George W. Bush's recent comments on creationism and evolution and why it is arguably possible to believe in both; the idea of intelligent design; and the belief that God is "not a dictator" and encourages free will. Other topics discussed include a "modern" fourth-century joke book; reports that exposure to dangerous environmental chemicals can endanger the genitalia of one's fetus; and a letter from a viewer asking for advice about her brother, who constantly boasts about having donated his kidney to her.

The first guests, actresses Meryl Streep and Amy Adams, join the hosts and chat about their feelings on organ donation; their new film "Doubt" (2008), in which they both don habits, as did Goldberg in "Sister Act" (1992); Streep's description of her severe character Sister Aloysius as a Sister of Mercy, like Elizabeth Seton, who became a nun after her husband's death; Adams' slightly dishonest means of landing the role of Sister James upon learning that another actor was being considered; Streep's love of the original play, first staged in 2004; her fears that co-star Philip Seymour Hoffman, whose character comes into fierce conflict with Aloysius, "didn't like her anymore"; her character's strong New York accent, inspired by playwright and director John Patrick Shanley's elementary school teacher, on whom the character is based; Adams' role in the popular Disney film "Enchanted" (2008), and the potential for a sequel; her recent engagement to actor and painter Darren Le Gallo; her extreme familiarity with the script for "Doubt"; Streep's praise for her talented co-stars, including actress Viola Davis; her sense that she became an actress because of her "show-off" tendencies; the pressure of Oscar buzz and why campaigning is "unseemly"; Streep's 14 previous nominations and Adams' one previous nomination; and Adams' proud memories of singing at the Academy Awards.

Next, actress and author Carrie Fisher joins the hosts and discusses Streep's portrayal of her in the autobiographical "Postcards From the Edge" (1990); her new memoir "Wishful Drinking," which describes her complex life as the child of Hollywood stars Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher; her frankness about her experiences with mental illness and honest conversations with daughter Billie Lourd; her sense that brother Todd Fisher "hogged all the sanity in the family"; her praise for "fabulous" electroshock therapy, which is no longer the frightening convulsive process seen in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" (1975) and other films, as a treatment for mental illness; and how she deals with the resultant memory loss. Includes commercials and promos.
