SIT DOWN, SHUT UP: PILOT {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

A rough cut of the pilot of this animated comedy about the lives of a group of apathetic and dysfunctional high-school teachers. The teachers and staff of Knob Haven High School in Knob Haven, Florida introduce themselves: Ennis Hofftard, an immature, swaggering English teacher; “Happy,” a dour Middle-Eastern school custodian who is dubbed by an unseen interpreter; Andrew LeGustambos, a pan-sexual Drama teacher; Helen Klench, an irate, masculine librarian; Willard Deutschebog, a lonely, constantly-nervous German teacher; Miracle Grohe, a hippie Science teacher and her baby, Merch; Larry Littlejunk, a fairly average physical education teacher with a crush on Miracle; Stuart Proszakian, an overeager, oblivious assistant principal; and Sue Sezno, a surly, no-nonsense replacement principal. Prinicpal Sezno arrives, threatening to fire a teacher if they get out of line with their students. Larry is assigned to uncover the mystery behind a bottle of drugs found in a student’s locker. He also reveals his crush on Miracle (contrasted by his distaste for her wildly unrealistic social viewpoints). Meanwhile, Willard confronts Ennis; a student caught him buying pornographic magazines earlier that day. Willard trusts in Ennis to hide his magazines, but Ennis botches the job, constantly informing students of Willard’s purchase. Miracle deduces that the drugs are steroids, but Larry counters that his football players’ performance hasn’t improved; the Knob Haven team is on a huge losing streak. Sezno believes that by injecting all of Larry’s players with the steroids, their performance will improve and the school will receive more money. She decides to test the steroids on Stuart, who will be acting as Larry’s assistant coach. At a staff meeting, Helen reveals that a time capsule was planted in the school 16 years ago which contains an expensive bottle of wine, which could bring money to the school. Sezno assigns her to dig it up. Larry tries to talk to Miracle, but he snaps when she reveals that his football players are participating in her hunger strike. She runs away, leaving him dejected. At the game, Stuart reveals that the steroids have caused him to grow breasts, which distracts the opposing team long enough for Helen, busy digging for the time capsule, to capture the ball and score for her team. Andrew attempts a cheerleading routine, but is also sidetracked by Stuart’s newfound breasts. Despite their efforts, the school loses the game. It turns out the “steroids” are actually female hormone supplements accidentally left behind by Helen. Stuart decides to stop taking the pills as Sezno reveals she never intended to fire anyone. Meanwhile, Helen returns with the time capsule, but in actuality she has unearthed Willard’s magazines, hidden by Ennis. The episode ends with Sezno announcing that Willard is fired.
