DEXTER: AN INCONVENIENT LIE (TV)
Summary
One in this crime thriller series, based on the books by Jeff Lindsay, about a forensics expert for the Miami-Dade Police who also happens to be a serial killer targeting criminals that the police can't bring to justice. In this episode, having lied to Rita about his "addiction," Dexter suffers through part a Narcotics Anonymous meeting but ducks out early, and Rita is exasperated to hear that he is not committing to his "recovery." Doakes continues monitoring him, and family members of many of Miami's missing persons flood the squad room, thanks to Pascal's thoughtless comment to a reporter about the Bay Harbor Butcher's many victims. Lundy appoints both Batista and Deb to his special task force and instructs the team to work on identifying the bodies to establish a pattern, while elsewhere Dexter pursues his latest potential victim, Roger Hicks, a car salesman who uses credit-check info to stalk and kill women. Deb grows uncomfortable interviewing grieving family members and requests to be taken off of Lundy's squad, and when Masuka arranges for Dexter to join the forensics side of the team, he is overwhelmed to see his own handiwork laid out for scrutiny.
Back at N.A., "Bob" gets up and shares his story, and a mysterious woman then invites him out for coffee and, though sure that he is lying about his heroin use, assures him that she understands "that need." Dexter admits to having a "dark passenger," but decides that the group is too big of a risk and tells Rita that he will kick the drugs on his own, much to her frustration. Dexter returns to Roger's office and searches for DNA to match to the crime scenes, and he is alarmed to encounter Roger's likely next victim, knowing that the Code forbids him from intervening without solid proof. LaGuerta criticizes Pascal for investigating her fiancé's finances on company time, and Rita makes it clear to Dexter that he is not welcome in her home until he resumes attending the meetings. After an upsetting encounter with the frantic mother of a missing girl, Deb again asks Lundy to remove her from the task force, but he informs her that he chose her because of her experience with the Ice-Truck Killer, urging her to use her strength and her firsthand knowledge of a killer's mind to crack the case. Matthews questions LaGuerta about Pascal's "erratic" behavior, though she accuses him of holding a misogynistic attitude against a female boss.
Doakes informs Dexter that he is "too careful," sure that he is somehow connected to the Ice-Truck Killer, and Dexter finds Lundy sitting alone with the BHB's victims, sure that they were killed according to some "twisted set of principles." After puncturing Doakes' tire, Dexter captures Roger, who frantically denies any wrongdoing, and Dexter marvels at his ability to lie effortlessly. Roger points out that Dexter does indeed care about his family, contrary to his claims of emotionlessness, and Dexter stabs him in a rage when he insults Rita. Startled by his own behavior, Dexter heads back to N.A. and this time speaks more truthfully about trying to hide his urges, afraid that "the mask is slipping." The woman, Lila, is impressed by his honesty, and Dexter is shocked but relieved when Doakes arrives at the meeting and seems satisfied with the "truth" about his odd behavior. Deb realizes that at least two of the BHB's victims were "bad guys," and she and Lundy begin to investigate the others' criminal records. Rita is thrilled when Dexter happily tells her that he is getting something out of N.A. after all, but she is taken aback to find that his sponsor, Lila, is in fact an attractive young woman.
