LOST: HAPPILY EVER AFTER (TV)

Summary

One in this fantasy drama series about a group of plane-crash survivors forced to live with each other on a remote and mysterious island. Characters' past lives are told through frequent flashbacks. In this episode, Desmond awakens and is stunned to find that Charles Widmore has brought him back to the island after he was shot by Ben. Widmore tells an angry Desmond that the island "isn't done with him yet" and orders that the "test" go ahead as planned, though Zoe and the other workers tell him that the machine is not yet ready. Desmond is alarmed when a technician appears to be electrocuted by the strange device, but Widmore declares that he must make a "sacrifice" to save those he loves. When Jin protests, Widmore states that Desmond has already survived an electromagnetic event and will be unharmed this time as well. Desmond is placed in the chamber, which soon floods with energy, and Desmond re-awakens in the alternate timeline at LAX, where he briefly encounters Hurley and then assists a pregnant Claire with her baggage, guessing that her child is a boy. His driver, George Minkowski, takes him to his boss, Widmore, with whom he seems to be on friendly terms. Widmore tells him that his wife Eloise is hosting a benefit featuring appearances by his own musician son and by DriveShaft, and he asks Desmond to "babysit" the bassist, who was arrested after overdosing.

Desmond finds Charlie at the police station, and Charlie tells him that he nearly choked to death on the plane when he attempted to swallow his stash and had a vision of a blonde woman to whom he felt a strong romantic connection. Desmond is skeptical, but Charlie offers to "show him" and drives their car off their pier, and once in the water, Desmond has strange visions of Charlie drowning at the Looking Glass and offering his final message of "NOT PENNY'S BOAT." At the hospital, Desmond undergoes an MRI and has further visions of Penny and their son Charlie, and then runs into his seatmate from the plane, Jack. Charlie, fleeing the hospital and confident that they both "felt it," urges Desmond to go find the mysterious Penny. Widmore is exasperated to learn that Charlie escaped from Desmond, though when Desmond tentatively breaks the news to the formidable Eloise, she seems unconcerned, stating that "whatever happened, happened." When Desmond overhears the name "Penny" and asks about her, however, Eloise sternly orders him to stop pursuing his newfound curiosity, saying only that he is "not ready yet."

Desmond then meets Eloise and Widmore's musician son, Daniel, who explains that he too had a "love at first sight" encounter with a redheaded woman and then wrote out a complicated physics equation, despite never having studied science, which suggests that he set off a hydrogen bomb at some point in the past. He observes that Desmond experienced something similar, and when Desmond dismisses Penny as merely "an idea," Daniel reveals that she is in fact his half-sister. Desmond finds Penny running a tour de stade, and he awakens back on the island as soon as they meet. Widmore tells him that he was unconscious for only seconds, but Desmond calmly states that he now "understands" and will help him. Sayid suddenly arrives to rescue him, however, declaring that Widmore's people are dangerous, and Desmond willingly goes with him. Back in the stadium, Desmond successfully asks out a slightly bemused Penny and then rejoins George, whom he asks to track down the Oceanic flight's manifest, musing that he needs to "show them something."
