VIEW, THE {MERYL STREEP, AMY ADAMS, NORA EPHRON} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of daytime talk shows hosted by a multi-generational group of women, including journalist Barbara Walters, television personality Elisabeth Hasselbeck and comedians Joy Behar and Sherri Shepherd. In this edition, Walters explains that the show is being pre-taped to accommodate Hasselbeck's upcoming delivery of her third child. The women then discuss the day's "hot topics," including a study reporting that couples who cohabite prior to marriage are more likely to divorce; the pros and cons of knowing a partner's flaws and habits before marrying; a twin study revealing that divorce makes one "look older"; moral, financial, and class issues surrounding organ donation and why it is illegal to pay for body parts; engagement rings for men; and Shepherd's young son Jeffrey's latest antics.

Actresses Meryl Streep and Amy Adams, stars of "Julie & Julia" (2009), then take the stage and comment on their previous collaboration in "Doubt" (2008), for which they were both nominated for Academy Awards; Adams' recent engagement and her thoughts on rings for men; how Streep learned to portray chef Julia Child, including her memories of comedian Dan Aykroyd's impression of Child on "Saturday Night Live"; whether Adams is an aspiring cook like her character, blogger Julie Powell; taking cooking lessons and learning Child's specific methods; cooking tips they now use in their everyday lives; and whether Child, who died in 2004, would have appreciated Streep's portrayal.

Writer/director Nora Ephron then joins her stars, commenting on Child's "sexpot" relationship with her devoted husband Paul Child, as described in their many letters to one another; Ephron's own culinary habits, learned from Child's famous 1960/1971 cookbook "Mastering the Art of French Cooking"; visual trickery used to make the 5'5" Streep appear as the 6'2" Child; and Ephron's views on how women can "reinvent" themselves, as seen in the film through Powell's self-discovery at age 30 and Child's late-in-life fame as a chef. Clips from "Julie & Julia" and Child's 1970s show "The French Chef" are shown.

Finally, the hosts talk with chef Lauren Braun Costello, author of "Notes on Cooking," who describes Child's important impact on the food world, including why she was "not afraid to fail," and introduces several of her favorite simple-but-elegant dishes, including roasted chickens, quiches, peeled asparagus and other items. Includes commercials and promos.
