PUSHING DAISIES: WINDOW DRESSED TO KILL (TV)
Summary
One in this fantasy-based dramedy series about a pie-maker whose touch can revive the dead. In this episode, in a flashback, young Olive is abducted by two crooks, Jerry and Buster, and held for two days before her "distracted" parents pay the ransom and lure the kidnappers into a trap, where they are arrested. In the present, however, they escape prison and head straight for Olive. At the same time, Olive goes to extreme lengths to determine the meaning of Ned's ambiguous comments about his feelings for her, and when Emerson and Chuck arrive, Ned reiterates that he has sworn off waking the dead, choosing to be ordinary "Clark Kent" rather than "Superman." Chuck appoints herself Emerson's new crime-solving sidekick, and they investigate the death of Erin Embry, a department store employee found dead in a frozen fountain. Emerson believes that it was an accident, but Chuck is convinced that it was murder, particularly when she spots the window display at Dickerson's department store, where Erin worked, which seems to exactly replicate the crime scene. When Chuck shows the window to Ned, he declines to join her investigation. That prompts Chuck to kiss her glove before pressing it to Ned's cheek, leaving him with a lipstick kiss.
At the Pie Hole, lovelorn taxidermist Randy Mann seeks out Olive, but she is distracted when Jerry and Buster suddenly arrive. Olive then reveals that the kidnap was accidental and that the two men treated her kindly, reacting angrily when her parents failed to notice her absence and causing the affronted Snooks to have them arrested despite Olive's protests. Having stayed in touch over the years, they request Olive's help in escaping across the border, then happily greeting Ned, whom they believe to be her fiancé. Ned, though uncomfortable, goes along with the lie to spare Olive's feelings. Elsewhere, Chuck and Emerson learn that Erin created the window display with her less-talented partner Coco, and store owner Dick Dickerson explains how their artistic creations led to more sales. When they meet Coco and her beleaguered assistant Denny, however, she seems unfazed by Erin's death and declares that she was the true talent. A confused Randy drives Olive, Ned, the "kidnappers" and a stuffed rhino, Aloysius, to Vivian and Lily's home, where they request disguises, and Olive and Ned are forced to keep up their romantic charade. Olive sings "Hello" as she considers the dilemma, and Vivian presents her with her would-be wedding veil, saying that it was once meant for Chuck.
Emerson and Chuck attend the unveiling of the Erin Embry Memorial Window, but Coco is then found dead in the store escalator in a scene mimicking the window display. When they find evidence suggesting that Denny did all the work on the windows and Coco and Erin took the credit, they are sure of Denny's guilt in both murders and realize that Dick is next. At the aunts' house, Ned comments that he is "trying on" a normal relationship by pretending to be with Olive and, insulted, Olive reveals the lie to everyone. Suddenly, the cops arrive for Jerry and Buster, and as they hide out in the home, Ned and Randy have a heart-to-heart about being true to oneself. Ned reconsiders his "retirement" and distracts the police by reawakening Aloysius the rhino, allowing Jerry and Buster to escape. Meeting Chuck and Emerson at the morgue, Ned reawakens Coco and Erin, who reveal that Dick is the true killer, as he in fact wants the store to go under and needed to put an end to their eye-catching displays. Dick is caught before he can kill Denny, and Jerry and Buster console Olive, pointing out Randy's devotion to her. Back at the Pie Hole, Olive recruits her friend Mother Superior and the other nuns to help smuggle the convicts out in disguise, and Chuck admits that she was envious of Olive and Ned's fake relationship and time together. Ned assures her that he wants only her, but then feels a surprising "tinge" of jealousy upon seeing Olive and Randy together. Includes commercials and promos.
