CASTLE: UNDER THE GUN (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy-drama series about a New York Police Department detective who grudgingly lets a rugged mystery-books author help solve murder cases. In this episode, Alexis surprises Castle with breakfast in bed and then declares that she wants a Vespa. Castle is called away to a crime scene at which a bail bondsman, Carver, was killed during an apparent B&E. The detectives find a shoeprint and note that someone called 911 from the scene an hour after his death, and then discover an electronic bug hidden in the man's office. As they investigate Carver's criminal clients, Castle asks Beckett about the Vespa, and she observes that Alexis is entering her "wild-child phase." They find a paper with strange codes written on it in Carver's sock, and Castle begins concocting conspiracy theories. Carver's wife arrives and explains that Carver never kept cash in his office, claiming ignorance about the codes, and Castle suggests that he was killed for the paper rather than money. They then learn that Carver recently argued with a client, Random Pierce, who failed to show up in court. When they track him down, he flees, but is captured by another man, a bounty hunter named Royce who was Beckett's training officer before he left the force. Castle decides to hang out with Royce and hear his stories of Beckett's early days while she questions Random, who claims that he was shoplifting elsewhere when Carver was killed. His alibi checks out, and Royce takes him away, first posing for a photo with his former protégé.

The detectives find a fingerprint in Carver's office belonging to a Clifford Stuckey, the man whose apartment Random recently attempted to rob. When they track him down, they find that he is an elderly former criminal who claims that he offered to drop the charges if Random turned his life around. Castle and Beckett, however, notice him looking at the mysterious codes. Parish discovers a cross of holy oil on Carver's head, and they find that Carver made donations to a church run by a Father Roe. At the same time, Castle tells Alexis that she must earn the money herself if she wants a Vespa, and Martha points out that she will likely do just that with no trouble. When they question Father Roe, they note that his shoes match the crime scene prints, but he swears that Carver was dead when he arrived and that he administered last rites and called 911, fleeing out of fear of being framed. He says that he was counseling Carver over his marital problems, also claiming not to know about the codes. Royce returns and makes a date with Beckett for later, and Ryan and Esposito reveal that Carver's wife purchased the electronic bug. She explains that she thought her husband was cheating and eavesdropped, but then overheard him saying only loving things. Roe's alibi clears him, but they find that he volunteered at the prison and guess that he knew Random as well. They then discover that Random's cellmate, who recently died, was Stuckey's partner on a 20-year-old jewel heist, after which the stones were never recovered, and Castle excitedly concludes that the codes are actually a treasure map.

Roe admits that Stuckey's partner confessed about the treasure before his death, asking him to give the money to the church, but that Random had already taken the map when he searched for it. Carver offered to help with Random for a cut of the treasure, holding onto the map for safekeeping, but Stuckey overheard them conspiring to steal it all and, according to Roe, killed Carver. Ryan and Esposito are outrun by the old man when they pursue him, much to the others' amusement, and Beckett goes out with Royce, telling him the whole story and admitting that she finally found and shot the man who killed her mother. Castle learns that Alexis sold her prized lightsabers to pay for the Vespa, and she helps him to discover the way to fold the map to reveal its message: "under the gun." Beckett then learns that Random never arrived at Central Booking and realizes that Royce is in on the crime. He has the map because of the photo he took with her, but has not figured it out, and he calls to apologize to her, saying he cannot turn himself in. She gives him a heartfelt speech about being in love with him because he understood her commitment to finding her mother's killer—which gives Ryan and Esposito just enough time to trace the call. They find Random locked up at Royce's apartment, and he claims that Royce "totally kidnapped him" before admitting that he heard Carver and Roe arguing about cutting Carver's wife out of the deal. They realize that she knew everything because of the bug and find her notes in her office, realizing that the treasure is at the cemetery. They find her digging under a grave marked "Gunn" and she pulls a gun after admitting to Carver's murder, and they are joined by Stuckey and Royce, both armed. Castle manages to distract the crooks and the police take them down, and Beckett regretfully arrests her former mentor. Later, Castle is disappointed not to have found the treasure, but one last clue helps them to find its true location under another grave. However, Beckett returns it to its rightful owner, and Castle learns that Alexis has decided against the Vespa. He ponders buying one to share, though she outsmarts him again when she asks to borrow the car as well. Includes commercials.
