One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Paley Center for Media's Inside Media events. Held at the Paley Center in New York, this seminar celebrates award-winning singer and actor Bing Crosby. Host Pete Hammond (media critic and reporter) takes the stage and introduces the panelists: film producer A.C. Lyles; songwriter Richard M. Sherman songwriter; family friend Maria Ferrer; daughter Mary Crosby; and actress and Crosby co-star Mitzi Gaynor.
The conversation touches on such topics as: Mary’s efforts to have her father’s works released on DVD, despite following his “low-key” style for many years; his slightly late involvement with television and how he “revolutionized sound” in motion pictures; how Ferrer met Bing and her childhood alongside Mary; Ferrer’s mother Rosemary “Rosie” Clooney and her “one of the guys” friendship with Bing; a joke played by Bing on Clooney’s husband; Ferrer’s nerve-wracking one-time musical performance with Bing; an anecdote about Bing’s house burning down; Lyles’ longtime friendship with Bing; Lyles’ circuitous path into the picture business with help from Gary Cooper; the story of how he “ran into” Bing one day on the Paramount lot and Bing’s subsequent kindness to him; Lyles’ associations with Jimmy Cagney and Ronald Reagan; and business and money advice from top Hollywood stars.
Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics: updates on the rest of the Crosby family; Mary’s fond memories of Bing’s famous Christmas specials; memories of Bing’s concerts; the experience of traveling as a family; Bing and wife Kathryn’s normal domestic life, compared with the children’s extravagant fun; Mary and Ferrer’s attempts to avoid performing at parties; and Mary’s recollection of her mother as an “extrovert” with “no fear.”
