PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: PALEYFEST 2011: 28TH ANNUAL WILLIAM S. PALEY TELEVISION FESTIVAL: WHITE COLLAR (LONG VERSION ANAMORPHIC)
Summary
One in a series of seminars presented as part of The Paley Center for Media's 28th William S. Paley Television Festival in Los Angeles. Held this year at the Saban Theatre in Los Angeles, the festival celebrates the excellence and diversity of American television and is dedicated to television's creative community. This seminar honors "White Collar,” a drama series about a debonair con man who makes a deal with the FBI to track down white collar criminals.
Becky Levikow (associate director of development, The Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles) offers opening remarks before introducing the evening’s moderator, David E. Kelley (producer, “Harry’s Law.”) Kelley introduces the show's executive producer and creator, Jeff Eastin, who presents the episode “Under the Radar,” which is screened in its entirety. (For synopsis and credits, see ACCNUM 104943).
Following the screening, Kelley introduces the panelists: Eastin; executive producers Jeff F. King and Mark Goffman; and cast members Marsha Thomason (Diana Barrigan), Sharif Atkins (Clinton Jones), Willie Garson (Mozzie), Tiffani Thiessen (Elizabeth Burke), Tim DeKay (Peter Burke), and Matt Bomer (Neal Caffrey).
The panelists discuss topics which include: the inspiration behind “White Collar”; casting the central role of Neal Caffrey; how the show has changed between the first and second seasons; Bomer's analysis of his character’s motivations and future goals; the moral ambiguity of Garson's character; the portrayal of a stable marriage on television; why Thomason and Atkins will be getting more screen time in the upcoming season; King's responsibilities on the show; how the series was pitched to USA; the frequency of on-set practical jokes; upcoming appearances by recurring cast members Hilarie Burton (Sara Ellis) and Diahann Carroll (June); the challenges of the rapid shooting schedule; reactions to Garson's frequent requests for rewrites; shooting the series in New York City; the effects used to depict a U-boat in the "Under the Radar" episode; and the odd content of notes that Eastin receives from the network.
Questions from the audience lead to a discussion of the following topics: the influence of social networking's feedback on the show; the episode count for the next season; DeKay's recollections of acting the HBO series “Carnivále”; the cast members’ influence on the show’s “mythology”; the storyboarding process; Bomer and DeKay's humorous collaboration on the episode where their characters “switch roles”; and working with guest star Billy Dee Williams (Ford/Bradford Toman).
