MODERN FAMILY: STRANGERS ON A TREADMILL (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series, a "mockumentary" about the eccentric individuals comprising three inter-related families in Los Angeles. In this episode, Phil excitedly prepares to host a realtors' banquet, though Claire frets that he will "bomb" with his terrible jokes. Gloria badgers Jay to attend his employee's daughter's quinceañera to prove that he does not consider himself "above" his workers, and Mitch is distressed when Cameron embraces a new workout regime – and a highly unflattering pair of bike shorts. Not wanting to hurt their partners' feelings directly, Claire and Mitch take inspiration from the classic film "Strangers on a Train" and agree to perform one another's "murders" by warning Cam and Phil respectively about their bad choices. At the same time, Haley advises Alex about her new friendship with a popular girl, Mackenzie, urging her not to appear over-eager. The plan goes awry when Cam is devastated by Claire's too-blunt comments about his attire, and Mitch is unable to bring himself to criticize Phil's corny jokes.

Jay recruits Manny to run interference for him at the party, though Gloria quickly realizes that they are at the wrong event and have crashed a stranger's engagement bash. Mitch chastises his sister for failing in her "murder" – overheard by Cam, who is upset by his deception. An apologetic Mitch urges Cam to express his own "candor" in return, prompting Cam to criticize his beard. When Mitch immediately begins to shave, however, Cam is touched by his willingness to accept the remark and the two make up. Alex's attempts to remain aloof with Mackenzie go wrong when she betrays her desperation for her friendship, and a desperate Claire steals Phil's notecards, sure that he will have to "play it straight" without any painful wisecracks. Phil, however, proves to be hilarious on his own, while elsewhere Jay finally realizes his mistake when he witnesses the far-too-intimate "father-daughter" dance. Claire apologizes to Phil, who was aware of her trick, for doubting his comedy, and they are quickly forced back into parent mode when a heartbroken Alex admits to them that she "has no friends." Later, Phil forces himself to endure Claire's less-than-accurate comedy impressions. Includes commercials and promos.
