WALKING DEAD, THE: WILDFIRE (TV)

Summary

One in this drama/horror series based on the graphic novels of the same name about a group of survivors fighting for their lives after the undead begin to walk the earth.

In this episode, Rick addresses Morgan over the walkie-talkie, unsure if he is receiving the message, and warns him not to come into Atlanta, as the dead have taken over. In the camp, a grief-stricken Andrea sits with Amy’s body, unable to leave her side. The others destroy the bodies of the dead to prevent their “return;” Shane says they must deal with Amy, and Daryl agrees that she is a “time bomb.” Glenn angrily insists that their dead be kept separate from the walkers and given proper burials. Jacqui notices that Jim is bleeding, and it becomes clear that he was bitten and is therefore infected. Daryl declares a “zero tolerance” policy for walkers and suggests that they should kill Jim right away. The others refuse, and Rick says that the CDC may be working on a cure and suggests that the group travels to the headquarters for safety.

Dale goes to Andrea’s side and tells her that he felt “cheated” when he lost his wife to cancer, but has come to regard her and Amy as his family. Andrea says that Amy died on her own birthday, and she places the necklace that she previously took from the department store around her sister’s neck as a gift. Across the camp, Carol finally vents her feelings on her abusive husband’s dead body, destroying his brain with a pickaxe. Amy begins to “awaken” and reaches for Andrea; apologizing to her sister and telling her that she loves her, Andrea then shoots Amy in the head.

As they continue digging graves, Shane tells Rick that they might have suffered fewer losses if he and the others hadn’t left to retrieve the guns, but Rick argues it was necessary. The group admits that they have few “rules” and need structure. Dale helps Andrea bury Amy as the others look on sadly, and Rick asks Lori’s opinion on going to the CDC. Shane asks Lori to talk Rick out of his plan, thinking it is unsafe, but she sides with her husband.

Shane and Rick do a sweep of the area and Rick says he has to protect his family, which offends Shane, who protests that he took care of Lori and Carl while they were separated from Rick. As Rick moves away, Shane appears to seriously consider shooting him, observed by Dale. Isolated in a camper, a feverish Jim suffers hallucinations as the infection takes hold, and he tells Rick to “save a grave” for him. Rick says they will try to get him help. Shane finally agrees to Rick’s idea and says they will leave for the CDC in the morning.

Rick sends out another message to Morgan over the walkie-talkie and leaves a note for him. Morales and his family choose to stay behind, and say their goodbyes to the group. Everyone else drives off, but one of the campers soon breaks down, and Jim takes a turn for the worse. He asks to be left behind, saying he just wants to be with his deceased family. After serious debate, they leave him by a tree with a loaded gun.

A man named Jenner speaks in a video transmission, saying it has been 194 days since “Wildfire” was declared and 63 days since it went global. He explains that he has been doing research to find a cure, and it is clear that he is the only person left at the CDC. An error caused his sample to be destroyed, however, and he laments the “huge loss” of his progress, saying that there is no point to his experiments and that he is considering suicide.

The group shows up outside the headquarters, and are alarmed when they see dozens of bodies lying everywhere. As night falls, a few walkers appear, and the group begins to panic, believing that there is no one in the CDC and wanting to retreat to safety. Rick refuses, saying that there is someone inside, and begs Jenner over the security camera to let them in. Jenner hesitates, but when Rick shouts that he is killing them by refusing to help, he opens the door. The group stares in shock into the brilliantly illuminated vortex. Commercials deleted.
