GLEE: ORIGINAL SONG (TV)
Summary
One in this satirical comedy musical series about a high school glee club in Lima, Ohio. In this episode, at Dalton, the Warblers rehearse Maroon 5’s "Misery," with Blaine singing lead as always. When Blaine asks Kurt’s opinion, he admits that he is jealous of Blaine getting all the solos and suggests that others should be featured. At McKinley, Rachel tries out her latest songwriting attempt on Finn, a tragic ballad called "Only Child," but he advises her to get to the "hard stuff" and write about deeper issues. Quinn frets that Finn’s continued closeness with Rachel will damage her own dreams to be prom queen, as Finn is a shoo-in for king, and plots to falsely befriend Rachel to keep an eye on her. At home, Kurt is stunned when the Warblers’ pet canary, Pavarotti, of whom he has been taking care, suddenly keels over dead, and at school he requests that they sing a memorial for their feathered friend. He sings a beautiful rendition of the Beatles' "Blackbird," and Blaine watches him with new eyes.
Will tells the New Directions that they cannot perform My Chemical Romance’s “Sing” at Regionals as planned because of Sue’s meddling, and Rachel once again suggests writing original songs. Still trying to make “nice” with Rachel, Quinn agrees, and this leads the rest of the group to support the motion. In the hallway, Brittany approaches Santana and says she wants to repair their friendship, but Santana, still heartbroken over Brittany’s rejection of her declaration of love, coldly rebuffs her, saying she is writing an original song for Sam, whom she is still dating. Sue stops by to mock them, as usual, and they discover that she has filled their lockers with dirt. At Dalton, Blaine declares to the other Warblers that he wants to turn one of their songs into a duet—with Kurt. Kurt is shocked and delighted as everyone else agrees. Will hosts a "songwriting seminar" for the kids, and Santana gets up to perform a ridiculous jazzy number called “Trouty Mouth” about Sam’s noteworthy lips, which humiliates him. Puck then sings an equally embarrassing rockabilly song of his creation called “Big-Ass Heart” about Lauren, and Will suggests that they have more work to do. Quinn corners Finn to talk about prom, saying that being king and queen is “the ultimate status symbol,” and browbeats him into making their relationship official right after Regionals.
Blaine enters as Kurt decorates Pavarotti’s tiny coffin, and he sweetly confesses that Kurt “moved” him with his rendition of “Blackbird,” saying that he suggested him for the solo so they could spend more time together, and at long last, they finally share their first (and second) kiss. Mercedes performs her upbeat song “Hell to the No” for the New Directions, and while they enjoy it, Will says that they need more poignant material. They admit that Sue and the other students frequently mock them and make them feel like losers, and Will is inspired. Rachel meets Quinn for rehearsal, and Quinn flatly tells her that she is dating Finn and that they have a future together. Rachel states her refusal to give up on Finn, but Quinn nastily replies that she is chasing an impossible dream and will never "get it right." Hurt, Rachel decides to write a song on her own.
At Regionals, Sue tries to intimidate Will, but he is undeterred. Her group, Aural Intensity, performs “Jesus is a Friend of Mine” in order to win over the conservative judges, including a Tea Party Twitter-fiend and an ex-stripper-turned-nun. Backstage, Kurt is nervous about his solo, but Blaine reassures him and they take the stage to perform Hey Monday’s “Candles,” followed by Pink’s “Raise Your Glass,” to which the crowd responds enthusiastically. Finn wishes Rachel good luck, and she tells him to listen closely to her song. Onstage, she performs her original piece, “Get It Right,” a moving ballad featuring the other New Directions kids on backup. They then move into “Loser Like Me,” their rousing anthem for outcasts, with Rachel and Finn on leads and featuring their signature “loser” gestures and confetti slushies, and the crowd goes wild as Quinn notices the sparks between Rachel and Finn. The judges confer and argue about the original songs as well as Kurt and Blaine’s romantic duet, but eventually make a decision, and New Directions is named the winner.
Kurt and Blaine bury Pavarotti and Kurt confesses his disappointment over losing, but Blaine says that finding each other was better than a trophy, and they hold hands. Will tells Holly Holliday about their victory over the phone, and then announces that Rachel was the “MVP” of Regionals and presents her with a small trophy. She gives an emotional speech about how much it means to her that they believed in her, and they wrap her in a group hug. Commercials deleted.
