SURVIVING SUBURBIA: DMV (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy about Steve Patterson, a cynical suburban dad who often finds himself at odds with his wife, two children, and neighbors.

In this episode, Steve arrives late at the Department of Motor Vehicles to renew his license. An unhelpful clerk tells him that, since he missed his appointment, another must be scheduled. Just then, Monica arrives on her handicapped scooter and goes directly to the front of the line. As the clerk doesn't know that Monica is only pretending to be handicapped, she proves overly solicitous to all of Monica's requests. Meanwhile, Onno asks Anne for the name of her gynecologist, since Jenna has been making inquiries. Later, Jenna asks Anne to accompany her to the doctor's office and Anne reluctantly agrees.

When Steve arrives home, he finds Jim cooking in the kitchen. After hearing about Steve's DMV experience, Jim tells him to "borrow" Monica's scooter and return to the DMV for preferential treatment. Steve follows through on the plan, though it hits a snag when the DMV clerk recognizes him and shouts about a fraud being committed. Steve abandons the scooter and flees the office. Elsewhere, Anne is taken aback to discover that Jenna got birth control pills at the gynecologist's office. Jenna makes Anne promise not to tell Onno.

When Steve returns from his second unsuccessful DMV visit, he fails at convincing Henry to retrieve the scooter. As a result, he admits what happened to an outraged Monica; the two subsequently go back to the DMV together. Monica learns that the scooter has been impounded, but the clerk helps her to retrieve it. Anne also faces up to her actions by telling Onno about Jenna being on the pill. When Jenna finds out that Onno now knows her secret, she angrily confronts Anne. However, the two talk about the issue and reach their own understanding after Jenna reveals her real reason for getting the pill. Includes commercials.
