ABC PREMIERE EVENT: DIAMONDS {PART 2 OF 2} (TV)
Summary
The second installment in this two-part miniseries about the far-reaching effects of the global diamond trade, inspired by the book by Matthew Hart. In this episode, Luna conducts a television interview and easily handles the uncomfortable questions about the rumors of Denmont's illegal activities. She confides to Lucas, with whom she has begun a relationship, that she has never even visited Sierra Leone and dislikes the many questions about her heritage. Joan visits the site of Sara's death, learning that Denmont technically owns the area, though it is really controlled by local rebel groups. Deakins suggests that she should "break away" from the U.N. mission, hinting that she can exploit her daughter's death in speaking out against Mozawa. Komba and Esau wander through Sierra Leone and are aided by some soldiers, though they are forced to run again when they come under fire from Nigerians. In Canada, Stephanie invites Steve to "have a little adventure" and search for signature minerals, and Lucas visits the site, annoyed that Lew's team is apparently close to finding diamonds there. Sloane calls and tells him that the "message" sent in Angola by Koster's group of thugs was successful, and when Stephanie and Steve fly over Denmont territory, their helicopter is shot at and they are forced to land. Stephanie swears to Lucas that they were not spying, and he offers to give her information to aid a "more aggressive program," though Steve firmly refuses to work with him.
Lucas tells the Denmont group that the Canadian team has agreed to a "marketing deal," and the board members applaud him for broadening the company's reach even further. He happily tells Luna about the success, adding that his father will be angered by it and revealing that Piers only brought him into the company on his dying wife's last wish. Joan prepares to give a speech condemning Mozawa, though Cesar finds her again and claims that he has important information, though he is quickly thrown from her hotel. Later, he is taken out into the Kinshasa wilderness and executed. Lucas visits his half-brother Evan and Piers questions him about Angola and about the large stone intended for Maya's engagement ring, furious that he is attempting to charge Moshe for it, but Lucas remains unconcerned. Piers then calls Moshe and asks for his assistance in bringing about bad press for Denmont. Lew objects when Stephanie declares her intentions to drill into a nearby lake based on Lucas' information, but she threatens to hand the potential mine over to Denmont if he interferes. Komba attempts to sell the stolen diamonds but receives only low offers, and Lucas learns that e-mails referring to his company's involvement with blood diamonds has been leaked to the press, prompting an aggressive protest. The lawyers suggest that the complicated case will only be pursued if "politically advantageous," and Lucas resolves to fight back against Piers and Moshe.
Armand tells Joan of Cesar's murder, pointing out the similarities to Sara's death, but tells her that Mozawa's regime is not to blame. Joan meets with Mozawa, and he informs her that Koster was behind the operation that killed Sara and that he was hired by Denmont, who considers the Congo locals an "impediment" to their attempts to find diamonds. He admits that he cannot prove it, adding that Sara is only one of many victims in the ongoing war. Luna finds Isaiah and questions him about the allegations about Denmont and the illegal diamonds, and he admits that it was he who vandalized her door as a warning. Moshe is outraged when he is barred from entering the Denmont offices, and Lucas decides to keep the large diamond for himself and has it cut in a dramatic style. Stephanie continues drilling, aware that the fast-melting ice poses a danger, still determined to find a mine. Lucas suggests that Luna drum up some positive PR for the company by taking a trip to Sierra Leone, assuring her that the rumors are not true. He then presents her a ring fitted with the large diamond, telling her that it is "truly rare." Komba and Esau seek refuge with Komba's aunt, but when Komba attempts to sell the diamonds on the street, he is found by Oba after all. Joan calls Piers to ask about Denmont's affiliation with Koster, but Piers admits that he himself is no longer in charge. Joan then meets with the American ambassador to Congo and asks whether the U.S. has traded intelligence with private companies like Denmont, growing angry when he refuses to admit any wrongdoing. Piers is shocked to learn that Lucas did indeed hire Koster and wonders if he can use Luna against his son, declaring that the company is the "victim" of Lucas' actions.
Luna announces her "coincidental" plans to travel to Sierra Leone, and Stephanie grows frustrated when no signature minerals are found in the lake. Oba threatens to "make an example" of Komba for antagonizing Mohammed and stealing his diamonds, but Komba swears that he can lead him to more stones. As Luna prepares for the opening of the Denmont London store, Piers visits her and tells her the grim truth about Lucas' association with Koster. Luna is devastated and admits that she loves Lucas, but seems to consider Piers' offer. Denver is uncertain when Lew decides to continue exploring the dangerous ridge on which the previous geologist had a serious fall, and Komba leads Oba to his aunt's house and hands over the additional diamonds, but then pulls a gun. After a frantic chase through several neighbors' homes, Komba finally shoots Oba and departs with Esau. Protesters gather outside the London store and Lucas hears that Luna is not coming, and he finds Piers waiting for him back at the manor. Piers informs his son that Joan will soon publicly accuse him of murder, adding that he plans to tell the Denmont board all about his many other illegal activities. Lucas tries to persuade Luna to ignore Piers, but she rejects him entirely, now convinced of his duplicitous nature.
Deakins is stunned when Joan decides to appear beside Mozawa at the press conference, sure that it will damage her senate campaign. Mozawa declares the need for a serious investigation into the murders, including Sara's, and Joan shocks the reporters by openly condemning her government's collusion with Denmont. Stephanie is elated when kimberlite is finally found in the lake, meaning that there is indeed a diamond mine nearby, and Lew admits that he was wrong to doubt her. She then realizes that she "forgot about" Denver, who is nearly frozen out on the ridge, but he is found just in time. Later, she talks to her father, who happily tells her that he has managed to sell their share of the land for a big price – to Denmont. Evan and Maya are finally married and receive the large diamond after all, and Stephanie meets with Joan at Sara's grave and admits that she "should have been stronger." Joan comforts her, however, having learned the truth about the deaths, and adds that she is not forgoing her campaign despite the controversy. Komba and Esau make it to a local school, and the priest assures them that they need not pay for their admission with the diamonds. The two boys gratefully join the other students, unaware that the school is in fact supported by the Denmont Company. Includes commercials and promos.
