PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: INSIDE MEDIA: AN EVENING WITH BONES {LONG VERSION}

Summary

One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Paley Center for Media's Inside Media events. Held at the Paley Center in Los Angeles, this evening celebrates “Bones,” the drama series loosely based on the life of forensic anthropologist Kathy Reichs about the crime-solving prowess of forensic anthropologist Temperance "Bones" Brennan and FBI agent Seeley Booth.

Host Betsy Scolnik (vice president, The Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles) offers opening remarks and introduces moderator Michael Ausiello (editor-in-chief, TVLine.com). He introduces the episode “The Hole in the Heart,” which is screened in its entirety. (For synopsis and credits, see ACCNUM 105364.)

After the screening, Ausiello introduces the panelists: executive producer/creator Hart Hanson; executive producer Stephen Nathan; and cast members Michaela Conlin (Angela Montenegro), Emily Deschanel (Temperance “Bones” Brennan); David Boreanaz (Seeley Booth); and T.J. Thyne (Jack Hodgins).

The panelists discuss topics which include: what transpired in the bedroom between Bones and Booth in the episode, and whether resolution will come in the season finale; how the “will they/won’t they” debate is the “central question of the series”; surprise at the show being in its seventh season; the infamous “Moonlighting” curse regarding the diffusion of sexual tension between characters; the “ultimate heartbreak” of the death of beloved intern Vincent Nigel-Murray (Ryan Cartwright); Boreanaz’s odd ideas for plots; Deschanel’s real-life pregnancy and how she broke the news to the showrunners; plans for the spin-off series “The Finder”; the decision to increase the screentime of supporting characters; Conlin’s nervousness about her character's pregnancy; whether the popular character of Zack (Eric Millegan) will return; the reasons behind the show’s one-year pickup involving the actors’ contracts; Boreanaz’s enjoyment of playing his character and decision to “live in the moment” regarding future seasons; Boreanaz’s experience directing three episodes; the decision not to do a musical episode; the common theme of childhood trauma on the show and how “abused children recognize each other”; and the “fandom” debate over Booth’s evolution in the sixth season.

Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics: the “tonal shift” since the first season as more humor was added; if producers keep abreast of the similarly themed drama series "Castle"; whether Deschanel’s pregnancy has affected her desire to direct an episode; the cast’s past attendance at Comic-Con; multiple changes in the writing staff during the show's first years; surprise at censors' ongoing acceptance of the show's graphic imagery; Boreanaz’s addiction to Twitter; and why vocal Internet fans “don’t get to call the shots.”
