FORGOTTEN, THE: DESIGNER JANE (TV)

Summary

One in this dramatic crime series about a group of volunteer investigators in Chicago who work to identify anonymous bodies. In this episode, Alex reunites with a friend from high school, Lydia Townsend, who explains that an unknown young woman was abruptly gunned down right next to her at a fundraising event and asks the team to help her identify the Jane Doe, already cremated because of morgue overcrowding. Lydia's boss Perry Hughes admits that the attractive Jane was allowed into the party without ID, and the coat-check worker at the venue reveals that he spotted Jane alone with famous – and married – fashion designer Thomas Jordan, who then bribed him for his silence. Candace learns that a bike messenger was injured in a hit-and-run just outside the event, possibly by the fleeing shooter, and when Maxine visits Jordan's home, her car is suddenly struck by another, driven by Jordan's enraged wife Francesca, who believes Maxine to be yet another mistress. Grace demands to know if Francesca ordered Jane Doe killed, but Jordan swears that the girl was merely showing him her original dress design, acting on the suggestion of a model, Chloe Devereux.

Walter and Tyler talk to the injured bike messenger, who describes the driver's heavy tattoos and piercings, and Candace and Maxine interview the not-so-French Chloe, who admits that she did not know Jane's real name and offers only that she was a fashion intern. When Detective Keller proves unhelpful, Lydia persuades Alex to break into the evidence warehouse and photograph the label on Jane Doe's handmade dress, hoping to use it to trace her, but he is caught in the act and arrested by an unamused Grace. The rest of the team, though concerned about Alex, quickly begins researching the label in his absence, and Alex finds an ally when a fellow prisoner recognizes him as the investigator who helped to exonerate his relative. The man agrees to help him track down the hitman who killed Jane, while elsewhere the team finds that Jane recently arrived from the Midwest, determined to land a high-profile fashion job. Alex talks with a "go-between" and describes the tattooed hit-and-run driver, and the man identifies a contract killer named Cutter.

Alex is released when the charges are eventually dropped, and Tyler triumphantly reveals that he has tracked Jane down via the clothing label and come up with a name: Rachel Walder. Alex makes amends with Grace and meets Rachel's brother Scott, who swears that his sister had no enemies or angry ex-lovers. Grace and Alex track down and arrest Cutter, who admits to being the shooter, but reveals that he hit the wrong person and was actually hired to kill Lydia. Stunned, Lydia struggles to figure out who in her life might want her dead, guessing that it may have been an ex-boyfriend or a recently-fired employee. Her most recent ex, Jonathan, explains that he abruptly ended things with her after being threatened by a man claiming to be her true boyfriend, and Lydia is shocked when Perry confronts her with a gun, revealing himself to be the true killer. He ignores her protests of ignorance and rants that she has always ignored his romantic intentions, and Alex bursts in with Grace and shoots Perry dead just in time. Shaken, Lydia tries to process her feelings of guilt over her boss' murder of an innocent girl, but Alex reminds her that she has helped Rachel's family find closure. Lydia then questions Alex about his relationship with Candace, unconvinced by his assurances that they are merely friends. Includes commercials and promos.
