MODERN FAMILY: FAMILY PORTRAIT {FIRST SEASON FINALE} (TV)
Summary
The first season finale in this comedy series, a "mockumentary" about the eccentric individuals comprising three inter-related families in Los Angeles. In this episode, Phil prepares to head to a Lakers game and arms himself with a number of snacks, though Claire is consumed with worry about an upcoming family portrait. Jay is exasperated to hear that Luke must interview him for a school project and sends Gloria to the game in his place, while elsewhere Cam excitedly prepares to sing at a wedding, though Mitchell declines to attend, citing his hatred of small talk. At the sports arena, Phil attempts to chat with Kobe Bryant as Claire obsesses about the eternally-broken step, sure that it will ruin the photo. She phones Phil for advice, but is stunned to spot him on television deliberately ignoring her call. Mitchell frantically calls Cam for help when a pigeon flies into the house, and Phil is flustered when Gloria lays one on him when they are caught on the "kiss cam" at the game. Alex informs Phil that Claire "saw him" and he panics, believing that she saw the kiss rather than the ignored call.
Luke is bored with Jay's stories of the 1960s until he claims that he served many famous figures at his barber shop, and Mitch ends up destroying half of the first floor as he dramatically battles the pigeon, "accompanied" by Cam's rendition of "Ave Maria." Claire continues destroying the step as Phil, Gloria, Manny and Alex return home late from the game, and she orders them to quickly change into their all-white clothes for the photo, now to be staged outdoors. An annoyed Cam declares that Mitchell should have attended the wedding after all and avoided the catastrophe, and the portrait is further delayed by the lawn sprinklers. Phil then inadvertently reveals his kiss with Gloria, and Mitch and Cam continue their argument until Jay informs his children that they are both "uptight about everything" and starts a mud fight to break the tension. They finally opt for a silly, casual portrait, and Jay reflects to Luke that he enjoys the family's absurdity. Later, Claire obsesses over Phil's hanging of the portrait, much to his annoyance. Includes commercials and promos.
