PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: AN EVENING WITH ENTOURAGE {LONG VERSION ANAMORPHIC}
Summary
One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented by The Paley Center for Media’s Inside Media series. This evening spotlights the upcoming final season of “Entourage,” a comedy series about burgeoning movie star Vincent Chase and his entourage of buddies -- E, Johnny Drama, and Turtle -- that follow him through all of his Hollywood adventures. Ron Simon (curator, The Paley Center for Media) offers opening remarks before introducing the show’s creator, Doug Ellin. Ellin offers his own comments before introducing a clip package about the show. Simon then introduces the evenings’ moderator, Elvis Mitchell (host, “The Treatment”).
Mitchell then introduces the panelists: Ellin; and cast members Kevin Connolly (Eric Murphy), Kevin Dillon (Johnny “Drama” Chase), Adrian Grenier (Vincent “Vince” Chase), Jerry Ferarra (Turtle), and Jeremy Piven (Ari Gold).
Topics of discussion include: Ellin on his collaboration with Ally Musika, one of the show’s writers; Connolly and Dillon on creating a bond between the cast; Piven on his character’s insensitivity; the verisimilitude of “Entourage’s” main characters; Ellin on the theme of friendship that runs through the show; Ferarra and Dillon on “clicking” with the cast; Piven on how working with Hollywood agents for years prepared him for his role on “Entourage”; the panelists on an episode guest-starring actor Val Kilmer; Grenier on defining his character’s relationship with Drama; the casts’ reactions upon watching the show for the first time; Piven on filming a scene in a famous hotel; the panelists on filming an episode in a U2 concert; episodes set in places such as the Sundance Film Festival, Cannes, and a Los Angeles Lakers game; the technical challenges of the show’s camera work; Ellin on recurring guest celebrities on the show; Ellin on recurring guest stars Domenick Lombardozzi (Dom) and Scott Caan (Scott Lavin); Grenier on his “natural nonchalance” and how it aids his portrayal of Vince; Dillon on Drama’s loyalty to the other characters; Ferarra on his character’s evolution; Connolly on his aversion to watching “Entourage” episodes; the panelists on the fictional in-show films “Medellin” and “Aquaman”; Ellin on obtaining film director James Cameron for a guest role on the show; guest appearances from directors Martin Scorsese and Gus Van Sant; and Grenier and Ellin on a recurring role played by actress Sasha Grey, playing a fictionalized version of herself.
Questions from the audience lead to a discussion of the following topics: whether the characters would consider splitting off from their group to pursue their own interests; whether the actors are worried about being typecast; how well the show represents the reality of Hollywood; the cast on how similar they are to their characters; and what the show has meant personally to the panelists.
A clip package is shown, including: Piven and his relationship with fellow cast member Rex Lee (Lloyd Lee); clips of Turtle’s marijuana use; clips of Drama and Dillon’s comments on his immaturity; Vince’s frequent sexual encounters; clips of the relationship between Ari and Eric; the many celebrity guest stars on the show; comments from the female cast members; and the status of the show as being “about friendship.”
A second clip package plays at the end, featuring a preview of “Entourage’s” final season.
