LOST: THE LIFE AND DEATH OF JEREMY BENTHAM (TV)
Summary
One in this fantasy drama series about a group of plane-crash survivors forced to live with each other on a remote and mysterious island. Characters' past lives are told through frequent flashbacks. In this episode, Ilana catches Caesar searching through Ben's office at the Hydra station, and she reveals that there is a man on the beach who was not the Ajira 316 flight with them. The man, who resembles and claims to be John Locke, asks for a passenger list and, when Caesar asks, admits that he remembers his own death. In the past, at the frozen wheel, Christian tells Locke to "say hello to his son" as he vanishes, and Locke awakens in Tunisia, where doctors set his badly-broken leg. Widmore appears by his bed and, reminding Locke that they have met before, explains that they have a common enemy in Ben and that he, Locke, must gather the Oceanic Six and convince them to return to the island or risk losing the "war." He provides him with money and a fake ID for "Jeremy Bentham" as well as the survivors' locations, and he assures Locke that he is indeed "special," dismissing Richard's claims that he will have to die. Widmore's employee Matthew Abaddon escorts Locke first to Santo Domingo, where he finds Sayid doing charity work, but Sayid flatly refuses to return to the island, explaining that he is trying to make something of his life after Nadia's murder.
Locke then heads to New York and meets Walt, who reveals that he has dreamed about Locke and asks about Michael, whom he has not seen in three years. Unaware that Ben is watching them, Locke next visits Hurley at the mental hospital in California, and Hurley assumes that Locke is another one of his ghost visitors. Locke assures him that he is alive, but Hurley too refuses to consider returning, panicking when he spots the "evil" Abaddon. Abaddon reminds Locke that he was the orderly who suggested that he go on a walkabout in the first place, stating that his job is simply to "get people where they need to be." Kate too declines to accompany Locke and suggests that he is behaving out of loneliness more than anything else, and when Locke demands to see Helen, Abaddon reveals that she died of an aneurysm before they could have a life together. Locke wonders if his own impending death is "inevitable" or a choice that he must make, but Abaddon is suddenly shot dead and Locke, fleeing the scene, gets into a car crash. He awakens in the hospital to find Jack there, and Jack angrily denounces Locke's claims of destiny, informing him that he is not at all "special" and that returning to the island would be pointless. Jack is momentarily rattled when Locke mentions meeting his dead father, but he orders Locke to leave him and the other survivors alone.
Despondent, Locke heads to a motel and pens a short letter to Jack before preparing to hang himself, but Ben suddenly bursts in, stating that he is there to "protect" Locke. He admits to killing Abaddon, but swears that Widmore was using Locke to take the island for himself and reveals that Jack has purchased a plane ticket, apparently convinced by Locke's words after all. Deeply moved by the realization that he is not a "failure," Locke agrees to work with Ben in reuniting the survivors, though mentions that Jin, who is alive, asked him not to bring Sun back. When Locke comments that he must find Eloise Hawking, Ben reacts with shock before strangling Locke and staging his suicide, stating that he will "miss him" as he takes Jin's ring and departs. Back on the island, Locke tells Caesar about the Dharma Initiative, and Caesar admits that he saw Hurley and several others inexplicably vanish from the Ajira plane in a flash of light, which seems to provide Locke with insight about his own arrival. When Caesar takes him to see the group of people injured in the crash, Locke spots Ben and calmly states that he is "the man who killed me." Includes commercials and promos.
