VIEW, THE {JULIANNE MOORE, ARETHA FRANKLIN} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of daytime talk shows hosted by a multi-generational group of women, hosted by journalist Barbara Walters and including actress Whoopi Goldberg, television personality Elisabeth Hasselbeck and comedians Joy Behar and Sherri Shepherd.

In this edition, Goldberg discusses performing at the annual Royal Variety Performance and meeting Queen Elizabeth II; a funny run-in with Queen Letizia of Spain; Walters' recent appearance on "Late Show With David Letterman," including an uncharacteristically "warm and fuzzy" moment with the wry host; Walters' annual "Ten Most Fascinating People" special, set to air that night; the death of the mother of film director/writer Tyler Perry, about whom he spoke to Walters during a recent interview; television anchor Bryant Gumbel's battle with lung cancer; and a funny sketch involving the popular soap opera "All My Children" and its plans to move its shooting location from New York to Los Angeles.

The first guest, actress Julianne Moore, joins the hosts to discuss the cancellation of "As the World Turns," on which she appeared in the 1980s; her new film "A Single Man" (2009), for which fashion designer-turned-writer/director Tom Ford wrote the role of lonely, hard-drinking Charley specifically for her; the challenges of playing a wealthy Brit and smoking real cigarettes for the role; her amusing memories of smooching Walters during a 2003 interview about her film "The Hours" (2002); her upcoming role as Annette Bening's wife in "The Kids Are All Right" (2010); and working with her husband, writer/director Bart Freundlich. A clip from "A Single Man " is shown.

Next, legendary singer/songwriter Aretha Franklin takes the stage to discuss performing in very cold weather at President Barack Obama's inauguration in January; her now-famous hat from the event, which she intends to give to the Smithsonian Institute; learning piano from gospel singer James Cleveland; her upcoming album "Aretha: A Woman Falling Out of Love" (2011) and its basis in her doomed romance with a younger man; her songwriting process, in which she discovers the melody before the lyrics; performing with her son and granddaughter; and why she does not plan to retire. Franklin performs "O Holy Night," from her album "This Christmas, Aretha" (2008) and her classic "Chain of Fools." Includes commercials and promos.
