PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: DISNEY XD: KICKIN' IT {PUBLIC SHORT VERSION}
Summary
One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented by The Paley Center for Media’s Paley Fest Family series. Held at The Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles, this evening celebrates “Kickin’ It,” a comedy series about the misadventures of a group of teenage karate students. Betsy Scolnik (vice-president, The Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles), offers opening comments before introducing the evenings’ moderator, Sam Rubin (host, “Hollywood Uncensored). Rubin introduces the episode “Kung Fu Cop,” screened in its entirety. (Episode not available at this time). After the screening, Rubin introduces the panelists: executive producer Mark Warren; and cast members Jason Earles (Sensei Rudy), Leo Howard (Jack), Dylan Riley Snyder (Milton), and Alex Christian Jones (Eddie). Topics of discussion include: how the show maintains its budget; how the teenage actors adjusted to portraying vastly different characters for the episode “Kung Fu Cop”; Earles on acting in a sitcom after his role on the show “Hannah Montana”; Warren on the concept of the show and its appeal to male audiences; Howard’s real-life martial arts skill and how it affected his role in the show; Snyder on the show’s strenuous casting process; how the teen actors developed chemistry with one another; how the cast first became involved in acting; how Howard’s martial arts activities led into his acting career; the cast on “collecting their no’s”; how the panelists felt about the show’s early ratings success; Snyder on balancing schoolwork with acting; and the panelists on what they hope the future holds for them. Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics: Earles’s inexperience with karate; Howard’s recent promotion to black belt; the early development process for the show; how Howard first became interested in martial arts; Snyder’s opinions on his character; Howard on his favorite episodes; Jones on his ideas for future episodes; how much influence the actors have on the writing process; Earles’s comparison between “Hannah Montana” to “Kickin’ It”; how the show plans to deal with the teen actors aging; and upcoming episodes of the show.
