PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: PALEYFEST: FALL TV PREVIEW PARTIES 2011: CW {PUBLIC SHORT VERSION}

Summary

One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Paley Center for Media’s Fall Preview series. Held at the Paley Center in Los Angeles, this evening celebrates the CW’s 2011 fall line-up, focusing on three new shows: “Ringer,” a mysterious drama series about twin sisters Bridget and Siobhan whose “double lives” begin to impact one another when they reunite after a long estrangement; “Hart of Dixie,” a medical comedy-drama series about a young New York doctor who moves to Alabama to pursue a practice; and “The Secret Circle,” a dramatic fantasy series about a teenager who learns that she is part of a witches’ coven when she moves to Chance Harbor, Washington after her mother’s mysterious death. Host Becky Levikow (Associate Director of Development, The Paley Center for Media) offers opening remarks and then introduces host Denise Martin (executive editor, TVGuide.com). Martin takes the stage and introduces the panelists: Nestor Carbonell (Victor Marchado, “Ringer”); Mike Colter (Malcolm Ward on “Ringer”); “Ringer” executive producers Nicole Snyder and Eric Charmelo; “Hart of Dixie” creator and executive producer Leila Gerstein; Cress Williams (Lavon Hayes on “Dixie”); Wilson Bethel (Wade Kinsella on “Dixie”); Jaime King (Lemon Breeland on “Dixie”); Scott Porter (George Tucker on “Dixie”); Adam Harrington (Ethan Conant on “Circle”); and “Circle” executive producer Andrew Miller.

The conversation touches on such topics as: Snyder and Carmello’s fondness for “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” starring “Ringer” lead Sarah Michelle Gellar; Gellar’s interest in the show because of its hours, its cast and its strong stories; Carbonell’s perception of his FBI agent character and his inability to reveal secrets, much like with his previous role on “Lost”; whether Ward’s character Malcolm is more than just a sponsor to Bridget; Snyder and Charmelo’s plans to write a noir-themed feature film, and its eventual evolution into the show; their plans to explore the mysteries posed in the pilot over the course of the season; the decision to cast “The O.C.” alum Rachel Bilson as the lead on “Dixie”; Bilson’s realistic age as a young doctor despite her youthful looks; the use of the “idealized” fictional Southern town of Bluebell, Alabama as a character; the show’s difference from many city-based programs; Williams’ description of his mayor character; Bethel’s description of his “scallywag” character; King’s role as a “Southern belle” with surprising depth; Porter’s role as lawyer with “a mission”; the challenge of working with animals, including an alligator; “Dixie”’s relatively light, comic tone, compared to other CW shows; “Circle”’s focus on witches, in contrast to the popular trend of vampires; the beauty of both the cast and the Vancouver shooting location; the show’s faithfulness to the original books, written by L.J. Smith, author of “The Vampire Diaries” series; explanation of the show’s premise and hints about upcoming mysteries; Harrington’s role as “the town drunk witch” and his potential powers; and whether the show, which airs following “Diaries,” is sufficiently scary to please audiences.
