Summary
One in this dramatic police/private detective series based on the British series of the same name about Detective Jane Timoney, an NYPD officer trying to do her best in a male-dominated work environment. Detective Jane Timoney is not given the opportunity to work on a recent murder investigation despite her name being next in the roster. The murder occurred in a townhouse; a woman was raped and then murdered while her children hid in a nearby closet. The police have seized Curtis Hull, a friend of the family, as their prime suspect. She complains to her superior, Lieutenant Kevin Sweeney, but he does nothing about it. Barred from the homicide case, she helps out by fetching the possessions of a held suspect on another case, and on the way deputizes the security guard of his apartment complex into the police force. The police hold a meeting about a recent string of violent rapes. Noting the location of the rapes, Jane hypothesizes that they have some connection to the townhouse murder, but her claims are dismissed by the male members of her department. They are highly resentful of Jane because they believe that she attained her position on the force by sleeping with a detective. Lt. Sweeney doesn’t think Hull committed the townhouse murder because a few facts don’t add up, although the detectives on the case are quick to pin it on Hull. He gives them a stern warning about taking Jane’s cases and swears that she earned her position on her own merits. One of the detectives, James Keating, spasms and collapses before the other officers. They rush him to a hospital but he dies before he can get into surgery. Jane offers to take the townhouse murder case from James, but a grieving Lt. Sweeney is outraged at her audacity and says he hasn’t decided who gets the case yet. She talks to her father about her situation. While there she receives the call from Lt. Sweeney: she’s on the case, much to the distaste of fellow detective Reg Duffy. The next day, Jane starts leading the case and starts by questioning Hull. She notes that he was noted on prostitution solicitation attempts, but that he failed to specify they were male prostitutes, indicating that he was secretly gay. This rules him out as a suspect in the townhouse murder. Next, Jane rectifies the lack of a child psychologist on hand when interrogating the kids hiding in the closet. She calls in a psychologist and talks with the children, managing to get a description of the culprit. With a police sketch on hand, the search is on. The police take part in a charity boxing event, the proceeds of which go to the late Detective Keatings’ family. During the event, Reg voices his outrage at Jane seemingly taking advantage of Keatings’ death and walks off. Jane is upset at this but hides it. Late that night, she receives a call from the security guard she deputized earlier, who has a lead on the whereabouts of the culprit. The police surround the culprit’s address and try to get him to come out. It turns out the police were off by one block and the chase is on, with Jane in the lead. She spots him but sends her car into a head-on collision; this does not stop her and she continues to pursue on foot. The culprit lashes out at her, but she keeps him occupied until the rest of the police show up to arrest him. Later, at the funeral of Detective Keatings, Reg and Jane come to an understanding; they share a mutual dislike of one another, but also share their absolute devotion to their jobs.
