PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: DOCFEST 2011: PROSECUTOR {LONG VERSION ANAMORPHIC}

Summary

One in a series of seminars presented by The Paley Center for Media in New York as part of its DocFest 2011 Television Documentary Festival. This seminar celebrates the New York premiere of "Prosecutor," a documentary film about Luis Moreno Ocampo, Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, and his first few cases in that position. Ron Simon (television curator, The Paley Center for Media in New York) offers opening remarks about the 2011 DocFest before introducing Barry Stevens (director/writer, "Prosecutor). Stevens offers his own comments before introducing an edited version of "Prosecutor." (For synopsis and credits, seen ACCNUM 106416). Ann Curry (co-anchor, "Today") moderates the following guests: Stevens and Ocampo. The panelists touch on such topics as: Ocampo's reactions to the film; reactions to the film from the people of Zumbe, an African village shown in the film; the role of media in combating atrocities across the world; Stevens on the involvement of major world powers in the ICC; the progress the ICC has made in its short history; media depictions of the Nuremberg Trials; Ocampo on the formation of the ICC and how it was treated in the United States; the "vision" of Ocampo and what role he plays in the grand scheme of international justice; how Stevens met Ocampo and what inspired him to make "Prosecutor"; reactions from African nations to Ocampo's prosecutions; and the upcoming end of Ocampo's term as Chief Prosecutor of the ICC and what he defines as "success" for the ICC. Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics among others: the ICC's role in the conflict in Libya regarding its leader, Muammar Gaddafi; what Ocampo plans to do about the situation with Gaza and the Palestinians; the upcoming conclusions to several trials at the ICC; the limited scope of charges against Congo leader Thomas Lubanga made by the ICC; the possibility of charges against United States leaders for possible war crimes in Afghanistan; Ocampo's interaction with individuals attempting to "lobby" him; attempts to prosecute weapon suppliers to African nations; the potential consequences of Palestinian statehood; the ICC's stance on a universal definition of terrorism; and punishments for those prosecuted by the ICC. Ocampo also invites the audience to join in a discussion about the film and about what people can do to combat atrocities across the globe, including: the importance of educating younger generations about genocide; support amongst United States citizenry for the ICC; the role of literacy education in third-world countries; and the deleterious influence of first-world nations such as the United States and how it could potentially encourage further genocide and atrocities internationally.
