HAPPY ENDINGS: THE SHERSHOW REDEMPTION (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about six Chicago friends trying to keep their group together after a romantic upheaval.

Everyone finds out that their mutual friend Shershow is getting married that weekend, on the same day as Jane and Brad’s anniversary. They are all surprised that this is occurring, as Shershow is described as a “maniac” and an all-around loser and slob. Penny remarks that she and Shershow made a “safety pact” to marry each other if they were still single by age 40. They decide that this makes Max the “new Shershow” due to the ramshackle state of his life. Alex is frustrated after a string of bad dates and wants to find a “normal guy,” upset that she has not had sex in a while. Dave walks in on their conversation and believe they are talking about Alex’s romantic encounters, but becomes uneasy when she starts explaining the truth to him. Shershow asks Max to officiate his wedding, and looks into getting a minister’s license. In the process he reveals to Jane and Brad that he technically didn’t have such a license when he married the two of them, making her extremely uncomfortable, but then excited that they have the chance to get married again and have her ideal “perfect wedding.” They all go to Wisconsin to attend Shershow’s wedding and meet his fiancée Melinda; they are surprised that she turns out to be attractive and well-spoken, contrary to their assumption of what she would be like. Penny, fearing that she is going to end up lonely and depressed due to being unable to rely on her “safety pact,” lies to Shershow and claims that she is engaged. Melinda is kind to everyone except Alex, whom she seems uneasy around; Shershow explains that she feels Alex is a “wedding jinx” and that her presence will ruin the ceremony in some way.

Jane gets the idea to have her second wedding to Brad take place immediately after Shershow’s wedding so that they can keep the same anniversary date. She sets about planning it despite Brad’s advice not to take it so seriously. Penny decides to bring in Derrick to act as her fake fiancée; she realizes this action is desperate but believes that Derrick can convincingly act straight long enough for her to deceive Shershow. Alex is still worried about the “wedding jinx” comment but Dave tells her not to worry. Sympathizing with her recent troubles, he proposes that they act as each other’s “wingmen” at the rehearsal dinner, and she agrees. Penny is swiftly embarrassed in front of Shershow when Derrick’s acting ability proves to be extremely limited and unconvincing. Alex takes up the “wingman” position and tries to help Dave converse with a woman he has spotted at the dinner, but Dave soon dismisses her due to her obvious lack of intelligence. Later, an inebriated Penny gets up to speak on Shershow’s behalf and commends him and Melinda before accidentally stumbling to the ground, knocking over a podium.

Later, after the rehearsal dinner, Alex knocks on Dave’s door, but it is answered by the woman he dismissed earlier, who claims she is about to have sex. Alex leaves, downcast at this turn of events. The next morning she asks Dave about this and he commends her for being a good wingman. Penny awakens with a hangover as Max tells her about her embarrassing display the night before. She looks out the window and notices Shershow apparently leaving the hotel with his luggage, and runs out to stop him. He feels that he is pretending to be much better than he actually is, spurred on by Penny’s comments the night before. She points out that he is far more responsible than he once was, but he fears that he will ruin all his good fortune eventually through his clumsiness and inability to understand others. Penny counters that he has created a new, more stable identity for himself and convinces him not to leave. The ceremony begins, but upon entering Melinda sees Alex, panics, and runs off. Alex feels responsible for this “wedding jinx” and goes to talk to her, trying to convince her not to throw away a potentially great future with Shershow. She compares it to her own situation, noting that she is simply pretending to be friends with Dave even though she is still in love with him. Melinda reveals that she actually retreated in order to correct an impending wardrobe malfunction. Alex, embarrassed, turns around and realizes that Dave is standing behind her, although it is unclear if he heard her comments.

Max officiates the wedding and conducts it in a genuinely heartfelt and emotional fashion, much to everyone’s surprise. Their wedding is completed and everyone celebrates at the reception. Dave asks Alex to dance after she denies that she had a “heavy convo” with Melinda. Max, realizing that Penny is still emotional about the entire affair, reassures her that she will one day meet the right person and will be in a great relationship. Jane decides to cancel her and Brad’s “re-wedding,” realizing that her marriage is already “perfect” the way it is. Includes commercials.
