PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: MISS REPRESENTATION {LA} {LONG VERSION}

Summary

One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented at the Paley Center for Media. Held at the Paley Center in Los Angeles, this evening celebrates "Miss Representation," the documentary film focusing on the portrayal of women and girls in the media and its effects on social development and change. Host Becky Scolnik (vice president, The Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles) offers opening remarks and then introduces the film, which is screened in its entirety. (For synopsis and credits, see ACCNUM 106337.)

After the screening, moderator Melissa Grego (executive editor, Cable and Broadcasting Magazine) introduces the panelists: student activist and film interviewee Devanshi Patel; actor and activist Daphne Zuniga; and filmmaker Jennifer Siebel Newsom.

The conversation touches on such topics as: notions of idealized physical beauty and its relative importance in defining a person; Newsom's experience receiving different messages from the public in response to the birth of her son and daughter; Zuniga's various roles and her interest in characters beyond their looks; how Patel became involved with the film and her perception of high school girls' limited aspirations; her role models, including her family members; Zuniga's inspiration from her younger costars on her show "One Tree Hill"; the significance of women's negative behavior towards one another; the film's impact and the need for a "realignment of values"; the media's characterization of female political candidates; Zuniga's uncomfortable memories of being asked to pose in her underwear at a young age; Newsom's enthusiasm for using social media to promote the film; Patel's college experience and life since making the film; her sense of "servant leadership"; female politicians' relative lack of involvement in scandals and why; the film's website and educational programs about the themes discussed within; the Occupy Wall Street movement and its need for more female voices; the need to speak out on important issues and avoid being commodified; comments on the new shows "The Playboy Club" and "Pan Am" and their messages about gender; and the importance of parents' viewing and showing of the film.

Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics: the need for parents to have early discussions about tough issues with their children; the rise of involved, interested parents and an online support campaign; the support of Newsom's husband, Lieutenant Governor of California Gavin Newsom, in making the film; the importance of the support of the education system, particularly in underprivileged areas, in raising well-informed children; the enduring acceptance of sexist behavior and comments, in contrast with other prejudices; the power of the consumer in supporting non-offensive material and products; and the non-profit status of MissRepresentation.org
