MODERN FAMILY: MY FUNKY VALENTINE (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series, a "mockumentary" about the eccentric individuals comprising three inter-related families in Los Angeles. In this episode, the couples all prepare to celebrate Valentine's Day, though when Gloria is less than thrilled about going to see a famous comedian, Jay acknowledges that their generation gap occasionally causes problems. Mitchell is distracted by a case at work, and when Dylan arrives with a bizarre and extravagant gift for Haley, Phil worries that he has been "trumped." He invites Claire to spend a romantic night in a hotel, suggesting that they could role-play to spice things up, though he has trouble deciding on a "character." Mitchell arrives home in a bad mood, explaining that his client decided to settle and denied him the chance to make a memorable closing argument, and Manny arrives and sadly explains that another boy took credit for a romantic poem that he wrote for a girl in his class. Much to Mitchell's exasperation, Cam immediately declares that they must crash the teens' date and allow Manny the chance to "reclaim the love of his life."
Gloria finds herself enjoying David Brenner's observational comedy after all, and at the hotel bar, smooth-talking "Clive" flirts with "Juliana," though they hit a snag when she questions him about his "nagging wife" back at home. Manny struggles to work up the courage to talk to Fiona, feeling intimidated by the poem-stealing boy, Ted, and Jay is annoyed when Brenner spots them in the audience and begins making fun of their noticeable age difference. Cam distracts Ted with an absurd phone call and Manny explains about the poem, but Ted catches them and refuses to admit his trick. Mitchell reworks his speech and dramatically "shames" Ted in front of everyone, but the plan backfires when Fiona is touched by his determination to woo her. "Juliana and Clive" prepare to head upstairs, but Claire's trench coat belt catches in the escalator and she is highly embarrassed when they are spotted by a series of acquaintances, all unaware that she is wearing nothing else. Gloria assures Jay that she will remain with him into his old age, and when they too encounter Phil and Claire, Gloria saves the day with a well-placed jacket. Later, however, Phil inadvertently gives his children far too much information about their holiday celebration. Includes commercials and promos.
