LOST: THE SUBSTITUTE (TV)
Summary
One in this fantasy drama series about a group of plane-crash survivors forced to live with each other on a remote and mysterious island. Characters' past lives are told through frequent flashbacks. In this episode, in the alternate timeline, a still-paralyzed Locke returns home from his trip to Australia and is greeted by his fiancée Helen, who urges him to consider following up on spinal surgeon Jack's offer of a consult. Back on the island, the "smoke monster," still in Locke's form, captures Richard and, realizing that Jacob told him nothing of the "candidate" process, offer to enlighten him, but Richard flees from the malevolent figure. Ben finds Ilana mourning her slaughtered friends and claims that the monster also murdered Jacob, and Ilana reveals that Not-Locke dragged Richard off because "he's recruiting." Off the island, Locke is fired by his obsequious boss Randy for lying about his time in Australia – but he then has a fateful run-in with the company's wealthy owner, Hugo Reyes, who points him in the direction of a temp agency.
Not-Locke finds a drunken and despondent Sawyer at the Barracks and offers to reveal why he, Sawyer, is truly on the island, while back on the beach Ilana convinces Sun to accompany her to the Temple by stating that Jin will be there – if he's actually alive. Traipsing through the jungle, a mysterious blond teenager sternly informs Not-Locke that he "can't kill him," while Richard suddenly appears and desperately begs Sawyer not to trust the supposedly dead man who's offering answers. Elsewhere, Locke visits the temp agency and meets the no-nonsense supervisor, Rose Nadler, who convinces him to accept a "realistic" position, adding that she herself has terminal cancer and has struggled with denial and anger, as Locke has about his disability. Sawyer considers Richard's advice and demands to know what Not-Locke "is," to which he replies that he's "trapped." On the beach, Ilana reveals that Not-Locke is "stuck" in his current form, and they give the real Locke a somewhat non-traditional funeral, during which Ben openly admits to murdering him.
Off the island, Locke finally tells Helen about his would-be "walkabout" in Australia and decides that he's not interested in Jack's supposed miracles. Not-Locke leads Sawyer down a perilous rock face and into a hidden cave, showing him the many names written, and crossed off, all around the walls. He explains that the remaining names – Shepherd, Reyes, Locke, Jarrah, Kwon and Ford – are the remaining candidates who were "chosen" by Jacob at some point during their lives to come to the island and potentially take over as its "guardian." Not-Locke urges Sawyer to reject Jacob's manipulative ways and simply leave the island for good – with him – and Sawyer agrees. In the alternate timeline, Locke accepts a position as a substitute elementary teacher and soon makes friends with the uptight European history teacher: Ben Linus. Includes commercials and promos.
