PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: PALEYFEST 2012: 29TH ANNUAL WILLIAM S. PALEY TELEVISION FESTIVAL: SONS OF ANARCHY {LONG VERSION ANAMORPHIC}
Summary
One in a series of seminars presented as part of The Paley Center for Media's 29th William S. Paley Television Festival in Los Angeles. Held this year at the Saban Theatre in Los Angeles, the festival celebrates the excellence and diversity of American television and is dedicated to television's creative community. This PALEYFEST 2012 seminar honors "Sons of Anarchy," a dramatic television series about a motorcycle gang operating out of the fictional town of Charming, California.
Betsy Scolnik (vice-president, The Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles) offers opening remarks before introducing the evening's moderator Stuart Levine (assistant managing editor, Variety). Levine introduces executive producer/creator/cast member Kurt Sutter (Otto Delaney), who sets up the episode "Hands," which is screened in its entirety. (For synopsis and credits, see ACCNUM 107419).
Levine moderates the following panelists: Sutter; writer and cast member David Labrava (Happy); and cast members Michael Marisi Ornstein (Chucky Marstein), Dayton Callie (Wayne Unser), Tommy Flanagan (Chibs Telford), Theo Rossi (Juice Ortiz), and Katey Sagal (Gemma Teller Morrow).
The panelists touch on such topics as: Sutter's fascination with motorcycle subcultures and how it formed the basis for "Sons of Anarchy"; the expertise that Sutter gained by serving as executive producer on the television series "The Shield"; Flanagan's thoughts on his character's relationships with the other Sons; Rossi's feelings on a recent plotline involving his character nearly committing suicide; Sagal's relationship to cast member Ron Perlman (Clay Morrow); how Sagal and Sutter keep their real-life marriage separate from their professional dealings; storylines of the upcoming fifth season; Perlman's initial lack of motorcycle-riding ability; Sutter's production style; the "mixed blessing" that Sagal's role on "Married With Children" afforded her; how Sutter uses Twitter to help fans retain interest between seasons; and what the panelists would like to see their characters do in the show's fifth season.
Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics among others: the casting of actors Tom Arnold and David Hasselhoff as guest stars for an episode; the possibility of characters from "The Shield" appearing on "Sons of Anarchy"; the show's music; Rossi and Sagal's particularly emotional scenes from the fourth season; Rossi's memories of meeting Tom Cruise while attending a Hollywood film premiere while in his "Sons of Anarchy" costume; the high temperatures of the show's shooting locations; the possibility of a "Sons of Anarchy" prequel; and Sutter's decision to join the cast as Otto Delaney.
